The candidate, who holds a master's degree in archaeology or equivalent, and has field experience, not necessarily Ethiopian or even Africanist, must demonstrate his or her appetite for long stays in Ethiopia and prospecting campaigns in remote areas. A good proficiency in English is necessary. Some of the skills required by the project may be acquired during doctoral training. The candidate must be both autonomous and able to work in a team. He/she will be enrolled under the co-direction of Marie-Laure Derat (CNRS, Orient et Méditerranée) and François-Xavier Fauvelle (Collège de France, Traces, Toulouse) and his institution of affiliation and logistics base in Ethiopia will be the French Centre for Ethiopian Studies (CFEE, USR 3137) in Addis Abeba. The candidate will be enrolled in the Doctoral School of Archaeology (TESC) at the University of Toulouse.

"Rock activity and troglodyte culture in Lalibela and its region"

Lalibela is a group of monuments and rock-hewn churches that has long been attributed to the sole King Lalibela (12th-13th century). The research work carried out so far, in particular by a French team co-directed by Claire Bosc-Tiessé and Marie-Laure Derat, has shown that this site is the result of multiple digging phases, the oldest of which are part of a troglodyte phase that is still very poorly documented. In addition, the site, which has a cultural or political vocation, has not yet delivered any remains of habitats. However, it is possible that the latter is to be found in many anthropogenic cavities found in the rock outcrops of the region. A link between these rupestrian settlements and the churches of Lalibela has never been attempted. The doctoral student's research will be linked to the work carried out at the Lalibela site itself and the results obtained by the doctoral student will in turn contribute to the interpretation of this site.

The doctoral project aims to establish an inventory and mapping (according to the most appropriate tool, which could be a GIS) of the troglodytic structures observable in the Lalibela landscape at a spatial scale yet to be determined; to carry out a description and a typological and/or technological study of these structures; to conduct a survey (traditional archaeological drawing) of a significant sample of some of them; to undertake, where appropriate, archaeological soundings to characterize material culture and date occupations; to conduct systematic surveys (photogrammetry) in the event of parietal representations; and to conduct analysis and interpretation of the data.
