Job summary: A call is open for four PhD/Postdoc positions in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or Biomedical Engineering at Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute (MITI) of the University of Madeira (Funchal, Portugal), under the Regional Project M1420-01-0145-FEDER-000002, co-financed by “Madeira 14-20”.
The research group of Prof. Morgado Dias (Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute - Partner of the Carnegie Mellon University - Portugal program) is looking for PhD students and researchers for projects in the following topics:
(1) Sleep Analysis (Imaging, Artificial Intelligence, Signal Processing)
(2) PV Systems Soiling and Fault Detection (PV Systems, Machine Learning)
(A) A master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering or Computer Engineering (preferred) or an undergraduate degree in the same areas, completed before arrival.
(B) Good oral and spoken English as well as good communication skills. TOEFL or IELTS scores are encouraged. At least the English proficiency that fulfills the requirements of CSC applications is necessary.
(C) Teamwork spirit.
(D) Self-motivation and independent working ability.
(E) Knowledge of and research experience related to the above fields are strongly preferred.
(F) Previous published work is a preference factor.
(G) Interest in pursuing a PhD is a key factor.
The purpose of this work is:
(1) Analyze sleep without intrusive sensors or with a minimal number of sensors based on feature extraction solutions and Artificial Intelligence techniques. Build a prototype of a small size device to monitor sleep.
(2) Develop advanced techniques for monitoring soiling and faults in PV Systems using feature extraction solutions and Artificial Intelligence techniques. Build and test a prototype that effectively predicts cleaning and maintenance interventions in large PV System structures.
Legislation and regulations: The scholarships are directed to applicants under the law nº40/2004 of August 18th (Research Grant Holder Statute) and the current conditions established on the FCT regulations http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT.pdf.
Work place: The work will be conducted at MadeiraITI (Funchal, Portugal) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Morgado Dias.
Prof. Morgado Dias research expertise includes Artificial Neural Networks, FPGAs and Renewable Energy.
The work in (1) will also be coordinated by Prof. Antonio Ravelo from the University of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, who is an expert in sleep analysis.

Scholarship length: The scholarships will have an expected duration of 6 months (renewable, if performing satisfactory), with an expected start in July 15th, 2019. The Regional Project M1420-01-0145-FEDER-000002 – MITIExcell end is 31st of December 2020. We expect candidates to enroll in a PhD program and stay in the group for 4 years, moving to a different funding after this project ends.
Monthly stipend: The monthly maintenance stipend will be 989,70 € or 1509,80 € (accordingly if the selected applicant have a Master’s or a PhD degree) paid by wire transfer, according to the Portuguese directives from the ministry of science and education www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.
This value can be complemented with social security reimbursement if the researcher subscribes the voluntary SSV according to the Portuguese Law – Lei No. 202/2012, de 27 de Agosto.

- Curriculum Vitae (30%)
- Former research experience (20%)
-Selected candidates might be invited for an interview or short exam (50%).

Notification of results: The final results will be published through an ordered list by final note that will be posted in a visible and public place at the Madeira-ITI, being all candidates notified by email.
