Two PhD positions (funded for 30h/week for 3.5 years) are available within the Department of Pharmaceutical Biology (Molecular Targets) at the University of Vienna. The projects reside at the interface between immunometabolism and bioactive small (natural) molecules. In particular, we intend to clarify the role of changes in cellular bioenergetics/metabolite profile for altered macrophage polarization upon exposure to selected small molecules. Depending on the specific project and focus, employed methods comprise among others aseptic (primary) cell culture, bioenergetics measurements via Seahorse Technology, MS-based metabolomics + bioinformatic evaluations, expression analysis via immunoblot, qPCR, arrays, or flow cytometry, as well as first proof of principle in vivo studies. The positions are funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), embedded in a doctoral program of the University of Vienna, and executed in cooperation with the Vienna Metabolomics Center (VIME) and the Medical University Vienna. We provide an inspiring and supportive work- and social atmosphere, supervision by expert scientists as well as access to modern state of the art equipment.

As optimal candidate you should be highly motivated and proactive, hold a master’s degree in (Bio)Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Pharmaceutical Sciences or a similar discipline, have an analytical mind and enjoy diving into signal transduction and metabolic processes. Team spirit + being at ease with independent work and very good oral and written English skills are expected, previous experience in project-relevant methods will be an asset. Proficiency in German is desirable in case you wish to participate in the compensated departmental teaching activities.

If you are interested, please send your letter of motivation including a description of technical skills, your CV, university certificates and relevant references in a single pdf file to application.pharma@univie.ac.at, using the reference code MACROMETAB.
