Postdoc or Scientist in Assessment of Flexibilities in Energy Systems

We are looking for a candidate who is motivated and experienced in investigating the impacts of (new) energy technologies on the overall energy system. You have a strong interdisciplinary mindset and a flair for data-driven analysis methods (machine learning), programming in general as well as visualisation. You will work with the team on research projects investigating the advantages and disadvantages of real world implementations of IoT enabled smart metering devices combined with an overarching control strategy identifying and providing flexibility services & managing the production and consumption of electricity at end consumer level. Projects are carried out in collaboration with industry partners, such as a consortium of multiple Swiss distribution system operators (DSO). In a SFOE funded project, you will be responsible for the identification of available flexibilities of consumers and producers through data driven analysis and modelling of the participating DSOs and end consumers. You will develop a minimally needed communication strategy for prosumer clusters - inter-faced by smart meters - to identify, control & optimise allocatable flexibility of demand and supply. Your major goal is to investigate the potentials, advantages and disadvantages of such a system in case of a nationwide scale-up. Furthermore you shall translate your and the groups research ideas into projects, in close collaboration with our interdisciplinary team and our external scientific and industry partners. You will develop and supervise master student projects within this context.

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated candidate with a PhD in Energy, Mechanical, Environmental or Electrical engineering (or related) with strong experience in programming mainly in R or Python. Candidates should have profound and interdisciplinary knowledge in building and energy systems optimization, simulation & modelling, Swiss and European energy systems and sector coupling. A plus is a good research and publication record and good knowledge in control & optimisation, as well as data driven analysis techniques and visualisation of data. Additionally, experience with the development, acquisition and management of (research) projects is desirable. The candidate should be proficient in German and English.

We are offering a multifaceted and challenging position for 2 years (with the possibility of extension) in a modern research environment with excellent infrastructure, with elaborate datasets of measurements on large scale energy system demonstrators (NEST, move, ehub).
