The University of Greifswald’s Faculty of Theology invites applications for a

Professorship of Practical Theology (W3)

for appointment by 1 April 2021.

We are looking for a personality whose teaching shall cover the entire scope of the subject area (with the exception of religious education). The position holder’s research should cover two of the core areas of practical theology: homiletics, liturgics, poimenics, church theory. The successful candidate will be expected to take part in third-party funded research, including collaboration with other theological disciplines and other fields of research at the university. The professor will also be expected to play an active role in the internationalisation and take part in the academic self-governance of the university. Finally, the willingness to exercise the office of University Chaplain is desirable.

The necessary qualifications are defined in § 58 of the Landeshochschulgesetz (State Higher Education Law) Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – LHG M-V: in addition to general employment regulations, a successfully completed university degree, doctorate, teaching experience as well as a habilitation or proof of equivalent academic achievements. These can also have been completed in ecclesiastical or church-related or diaconal fields of work.

In accordance with § 61 LHG M-V, the professor appointed will be assigned the status of a civil servant (Beamtenverhältnis) with unlimited tenure; alternatively, if the applicant is not permanently available: limited tenure as a civil servant or public service employee. Furthermore, the appointment of a full-time university lecturer at a faculty of protestant theology requires the consent of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany with regard to the teaching and confession of the person to be employed (in accordance with Article 4(2) of the Treaty between the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mecklenburg and the Pomeranian Evangelical Church of 20 January 1994 [Güstrow Treaty]). Appointment to the professorship therefore requires membership of the Evangelical Lutheran Church or a church that is in communion with the Lutheran Churches.

This vacancy is open to all applicants, irrespective of gender. The University would like to increase the proportion of women in areas in which they are underrepresented.
