OFFER DESCRIPTION
Skilled and committed employees are a crucial factor in the success of Linköping University. And we need more of them. Our core expertise comes from teachers and researchers, but a successful university requires experienced and motivated employees in many fields. Everyone is important. We need to recruit many new employees thanks to, among all, an expansion in our research activity. We need you here. We look forward to receiving your application!
The Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKE) is one of the university’s largest departments, with operations mainly in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
Our aim is to engage in medical and biomedical education and research of high international standing. At undergraduate level the department is responsible for most of the medical programme, the speech and language pathology programme and the medical biology programme.

LINKÖPING UNIVERSITY
Hereby advertises a position as
PhD student in Medical science
formally based at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKE)
Duties
As a PhD student you will primarily devote yourself to your research. As a PhD student you are limited devoted to work with education and administration up to 20 percent of full time.
As a PhD student you will participate in the project: Development and validation of biosensor-based biomarkers in multiple sclerosis
Three research groups at LiU were recently awarded funding for the EU International Training Network BORGES (“Biosensing with organic electrodes”), providing funding for one PhD student at the Medical Faculty, Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, IKE (this position), and two other PhD positions associated with the Technical Faculty, at the Laboratory of Organic Electronics (LOE). The overall aim of the project is to develop label-free sensing platforms for inflammatory biomarkers in multiple sclerosis (MS). MS is a neurological inflammatory disease of the central nervous system, with a high demand for improving prediction and monitoring of disease activity and optimizing drug treatment in a personalised manner. The current project at IKE is oriented to immunology and neurology with the main objective to apply and test biosensor candidates being developed at LOE and the other BORGES partners and to benchmark new candidates with existing biomarkers. The work takes place in a lab- and preclinical environment in close collaboration with clinicians and biologists, and includes bio-assays, work with biobanks and statistical evaluations. In addition, the PhD student at IKE will closely collaborate with the parallel BORGES PhDs at LOE (and other BORGES partners) and contribute to scientific and practical coordination between the units. Thus, the activities will include extensive interdisciplinary research activity – from device fabrication to testing biosensing in cell and tissue models– and promise a revolutionary approach to disease monitoring and treatment. As part of an EU International Training Network, the PhD student will be part of the network of other early-stage researchers from the other 9 academic partners across Europe and will have access and research-visit opportunities through the consortium.
Qualifications
Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.
A suitable background for this position is a master’s or engineering degree in medical or technical biology. Previous experience in laboratory work and competence in immunological methodology is a merit. Competence in statistical work and evaluation is of value, as well as previous experience in multidisciplinary activities. Since the project is performed in collaboration with several different departments (like clinical, immunological laboratory, physics and electronics), skills in communication and ability to collaborate are important qualities. Research at IKE and within the BORGES network is carried out predominantly in English, so relative fluency is needed.
At the date of signing the employment contract, the applicant must be (at most) in their fourth year of their research career and must not have already obtained a doctoral degree. Furthermore, at the date of signing the employment contract, the applicant must not have stayed or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 of the previous 36 months (3 years). Details on these criteria can be found via the European Commission’s information on Innovative Training Networks (such as BORGES): https://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/sites/mariecurie2/files/msca-itn-fellows-note_en_v2.pdf (see page 2).
Appointment time
The appointment will be until further notice for a maximum of one year at a time. A doctoral student may not be employed during a period not exceeding eight years. The total time of appointment must no exceed the equivalent of four years´ full time research training.
Starting date
By agreement.
Salary
The salary for PhD students is based on the department’s salary scale.
