We are looking for a highly motivated doctoral candidate in experimental physics. Your research will focus on dynamic events at solid-liquid interfaces, in particular using liquid-repellent surfaces. The work is related to our results on superhydrophobic surfaces (Science 2019 https://science.sciencemag.org/content/363/6432/1147, Science 2016 https://science.sciencemag.org/content/352/6282/142, Nature Communications 2017 https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-017-01510-7 ). The position is based in the Soft Matter and Wetting group at the Department of Applied Physics, Aalto University (Prof. Robin Ras, http://physics.aalto.fi/smw ).
The annual total workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is 1624 hours. The position will be located at the Aalto University Otaniemi Campus. The expected starting salary for a PhD candidate is approx. 2400 €/month and follows the university salary system. The contract includes Aalto University occupational health care.

Your main task is to perform experiments using an advanced measurement setup, make modifications to the setup, analyze results, and to develop new concepts. The project aims to develop improved understanding on the fundamentals of surface wetting with potential for publications in high-impact journals. The project also has an applied edge with potential to secure IPR.
We are looking for an outstanding candidate with a strong background in soft matter physics or in a related field. Thus, the candidate should hold a M.Sc. degree in physics or related field. Experience in cleanroom microfabrication and/or theoretical/modeling work in support of the experiments are considered as assets.
The ability to collaborate and interact with other researchers and research communities is important. You should have good communication skills, good analytical and experimental skills and good ability to work independently toward the goals of the project.
The successful candidate is expected to:
- conduct research on superhydrophobic surfaces, their in-depth advanced characterization, and their application in technologies
- publish research outcomes in high-impact peer-reviewed journals
- work in a collaborative interdisciplinary environment
The position is immediately available. The doctoral candidate will first be granted a two-year contract, followed by an extension for another two-year period after intermediate evaluation.
