OFFER DESCRIPTION

Position: UVIGO Marine Research Centre (CIM-UVIGO) of the University of Vigo offers a temporary position to support the research line on Sustainable exploitation of marine resources. Applications are welcome to cover the Research Assistant position at the Future Oceans Lab (FOL) research group, led by Dr. Elena Ojea and working on the European Research Council (ERC Starting Grant) project “CLOCK: Climate Adaptation to Shifting Stocks”.

 

Job Description:

The successful applicant will work together with the Principal Investigator in the ERC project CLOCK – Climate Adaptation to Shifting Stocks. This is a highly multidisciplinary project that addresses Adaptation to Climate Change in Marine systems from an ecological, social and an economic perspective. The researcher will have the chance to explore the needs for adaptation in different marine systems, such as protected areas or areas under property rights, and the socioeconomic consequences of implementing these adaptation options. Moreover, the candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with the PI in the scientific reports of IPCC and other projects carried out at FOL.

We are looking for a Bachelor’s degree with background in Marine ecosystems and/or policy, highly motivated, and with great technical, language, and team work skills.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Start date is negotiable, but ideally would be in June 2019 with duration of 5 months (2-month trial period), that can be renewed upon performance. Starting date and final duration of the contract will be conditioned by administrative and funding requirements.
  • Salary level and step commensurate with qualifications, in the range of 1.000 – 1.200€ gross per month.

Minimum Qualifications:

At the time of recruitment the candidate:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in marine ecology, natural resource economics, environmental science and management, climate change adaptation, fishery science or related field.
  • A background and/or experience up to 2 years in climate change impacts on fisheries and its socio-economic implications.
  • Coding skills and experience with R or similar and big data analysis.
  • High English level written and spoken.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Master’s in marine ecology, natural resource economics, environmental science and management, climate change adaptation, fishery science or related field.
  • Experience with quantitative, statistical and modeling approaches to environmental management, including models related to fisheries management, climate vulnerability analyses and/or MPA design;
  • Experience with qualitative approaches to environmental management, stakeholder analysis, focus groups, preference analysis, participative methods, etc.;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English, to contribute to reports and peer-reviewed scientific publications, deliver presentations, and translate scientific concepts for diverse audiences;
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain strong relationships with academic, NGO and government partners and to work effectively as part of a highly collaborative research team;
  • Willingness to travel internationally;
  • Written and spoken Spanish or Portuguese.

All candidates will have feedback with a message as proof of delivery. All candidates complying with the Required Qualifications will be evaluated based on the Preferred Qualifications by the Evaluation Commission formed by research and administrative staff of the University of Vigo. Top candidates will be invited to an individual online interview. The final decision criteria will be based on merits (60%) and the interview (40%). Specifically:

- Professional background (50%):

         -Background in climate change impacts on fisheries and its socio-economic implications (25%).

        - Experience in big data analysis, R and statistical approaches (25%)

-Training (10%):

     Training curse related with the professional background required

-Interview (40%)

    During this phase the supporting documents of your qualifications and merits can be required.
