The LOE Bioelectronics team was recently awarded funding for the EU International Training Network BORGES (“Biosensing with organic electrodes”), providing funding for a PhD student at LOE and an associated PhD student at LiU’s Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKE). The overall aim of the project is to develop label-free sensing platforms for inflammatory biomarkers in multiple sclerosis (MS). MS is a neurological disease with a high demand for improving prediction and monitoring of disease activity and optimizing drug treatment in a personalised manner. LOE’s main contribution to this effort (and the primary focus of this PhD position) will be in developing organic bioelectronic sensors. These activities will include extensive interdisciplinary research activity – from device fabrication to testing biosensing in cell and tissue models– and promise a revolutionary approach to disease monitoring and treatment. As part of an EU International Training Network, the PhD student will be part of the network of other early-stage researchers from the other 9 academic partners across Europe and will have access and research-visit opportunities through the consortium.

As a PhD student you will primarily devote yourself to your research. As a PhD student you are limited to work with education and administration up to 20 percent of full time.

The PhD student will develop organic bioelectronic components such as organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) for biosensing applications. The research will include materials and devices based on (semi)conducting polymers as well as polyelectrolyte ”ion conductors” with the aim of translating biological and electronic signals. The PhD studies will further include processing of components in a cleanroom environment, characterization of materials and electrical/ionic properties, and fundamental studies of sensing and electrochemistry. Many of these activities will be in close collaboration with the parallel BORGES PhD at Linköping University’s Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine.

Qualified to PhD studentships are only those who are or have been admitted to graduate studies.

A suitable background for this position is a master’s or engineering degree in physics, materials science, electronics, or biotechnology. Previous experience in multidisciplinary activities is valuable. Research at the Laboratory of Organic Electronics – and within the BORGES network – is carried out predominantly in English, so relative fluency is favorable.

At the date of signing the employment contract, the applicant must be (at most) in their fourth year of their research career and must not have already obtained a doctoral degree. Furthermore, at the date of signing the employment contract, the applicant must not have stayed or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 of the previous 36 months (3 years). Appointment time
The appointment will be until further notice for a maximum of one year at a time. A doctoral student may not be employed during a period exceeding eight years. The total time of appointment must not exceed the equivalent of four years´ full time research training.

Starting date 
Autumn 2019.

The salary will be based on the allowances, set by the EU commission as part of the program, and on the regional taxation.
