A full-time position is open in the field of "Environmental risks analysis" at the Faculty of Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech - University of Liège (GxABT-ULiège) from 01st August 2019.

You will find below some information about research and teaching activities, community services, the profile and the application procedure.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

The profile is concerned with the assessment of the impact of human activities (land use, silvicultural and agricultural practices, use of fertilizers and phytosanitary products, agricultural recycling of exogenous organic matter, etc.) on environmental quality (water, soil, air, ecosystems) and human health. There are many agri-environmental issues related to anthropogenic pollution (contamination of the food chain by excess of pesticides, nitrate, trace metals, organic pollutants, microplastics, soil degradation by acidification, salinization, eutrophication of surface waters, air pollution, disruption of major biogeochemical cycles, alteration of biodiversity and ecosystems, etc.) and these issues concern very contrasting spatial patterns. In addition, the physical, chemical and biological processes involved are variable in time and space.

More specifically, the recruited person should aim to (I) quantify the risks related to contaminant transfers in the water-ground-plant continuum in agricultural environments and (II) identify the levers of agronomic action for sustainable land use. His or her research activities will specifically focus on (I) improving knowledge about the relationships (causal and feedback) between practices and processes at different spatial scale levels (plot, landscape, region, etc.) and (II) integrating some uncertainties about this knowledge into methodologies of spatialized risk assessment which can beadapted to complex environments.

Managing environmental risks requires holistic approaches that integrate the processes in place within the water-ground-plant continuums and tools adapted to the relational, spatial and temporal complexity that allow for appropriate decision making. Based on the data acquired by spot measurements in controlled or natural system experiments, in particular within the research infrastructures of Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech (EnvironmentIsLife and AgricultureIsLife platforms from TERRA research center), and based on statistical and geostatistical modelling, spatial analysis tools for the quantification and propagation of uncertainties at the scale of a territory. The candidate must meet the challenges of scale transfer (upscaling). He/She will contribute to building decision support tools based on the simulation of spatialized scenarii for the sustainable use of natural resources and the development of efficient models of multifunctional agriculture within a multidisciplinary team of researchers.

TEACHING ACTIVITIES

The teaching profile is primarily focused on the Bioengineer Masters both in Environmental Sciences and Technologies and in Agricultural Sciences, but may also include courses in other Master Degrees. More particularly, he/she will contribute to the teaching of concepts and practices in data analysis, modelling and spatial analysis, risk assessment related to the contamination of the environment and sustainable management of natural resources.

The teaching activities at GxABT will range from 10 to 15 credits.

Based on the conclusions of the CTI (Engineer Titles Commission) audit and the revision of the bioengineer training program that will follow, it may also be requested from the candidate to develop new teaching loads in:

• impacts of human activities and evaluation of the optimization of nutrient use and PPP within the water-ground-plant-air continuum;

• advanced methods of spatial analysis.

The candidate will supervise final master theses and doctoral theses.

SERVICES TO THE COMMUNITY

The candidate will become involved in the community services of the Faculty of Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech and the University of Liège, and beyond in services to the society, in consultation with his/her hierarchical authorities.

• report a recognized field-based scientific experience and international publications in relation to the analysis of environmental risks;

• demonstrate an ability to work on interdisciplinary themes;

• be able to work in a team and with shared human and material resources within the structures of GxABT;

• be available for various functions related to community services and vulgarisation.

The candidate will also be able to manage a technical staff and will have a good knowledge of English. The candidate will be available for missions abroad. Some educational experience will be an advantage. Finally, the candidate will subscribe to the general objectives of Quality that the Institution develops. On his/her first day, the candidate will be asked to sign an agreement relating to the ownership of research results.
