Applications are invited for full-time Early Stage Researchers (ESRs)/PhD student positions part of WindMill project (Integrating WIreless Communication Engineering and MachIne Learning). The project offers an excellent research and training programme:

-opportunity to join a network of leading Universities, research institutes and companies in the field of wireless communications and machine learning;

-ESRs are primarily hosted by UniPD with stays in partner institutions (secondments);

- training programme including regular summer and winter schools to build technical skills as well as soft skills;

- ESRs will be contractually employed for 36 months by the University.

 

The ESR will be enrolled in the Information Engineering PhD programme at University of Padova. Further information about the PhD project is below:

ESR12: Anticipatory techniques for wireless network optimisation

Objectives: (1) Identify critical context information for anticipatory performance optimisation; (2) Study ML techniques to predict the context information; (3) Develop anticipatory optimisation techniques; (4) Assess the impact of anticipation accuracy, and resilience to data corruption.

Expected Results: (1) Identify ML algorithms to predict the evolution of key context information (e.g., channel gain, traffic generated by a source, nodes mobility); (2) Develop optimisation techniques based on such predictions. Performance gain to be proved through simulations.

Benefits

The ESRs will monthly receive a Living Allowance (3.413,88 euros), a Mobility Allowance (600 euros) and, where applicable, a Family Allowance (according to the Marie Curie-ITN rules).

The above-mentioned allowances are gross EU contribution to the salary costs of the researcher, consequently the net salary results from deducting all compulsory (employer /employee) social security contributions from the gross amounts.

Eligibility criteria

All candidates must meet the following requirements to be considered for this post:

Early-Stage Researchers (ESRs) shall at the time of recruitment by the host organisation be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctoral degree. Full-time equivalent research experience is measured from the date when a researcher obtained the degree which would formally entitle him or her to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the researcher is recruited.

At the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to the recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status (under the 1951 Geneva Convention and the 1967 Protocol) are not taken into account.

We remark that the eligibility requirements must be satisfied at the time of recruitment by the host organization. Therefore, applications from candidates that do not satisfy such requirements at the time of application are provisionally accepted. If considered for the position, the applicant will be requested to prove that the eligibility requirements wil be satisfied by the time of recruitment.

The selection and recruitment processes of the ESRs will be in accordance with the European Charter and Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers and according to national legislation and recruitment procedures with the university. Skills/Qualifications

A Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, or an equivalent qualification obtained after a course of university studies of at least four years that gives access to the doctorate in the country in which it was awarded. Strong background in wireless communications and/or machine learning is an advantage.

Excellent written and verbal communication, as well as presentation skills.

Highly proficient English language skills.

Excellent organisational skills, creative, innovative, independent thinker.

Motivation to collaborate in an interdisciplinary international team.

Motivation to participate in training programs.

Ability to travel and work in and outside Europe.

Compliance with the ITN 2018 eligibility requirements.
