Background: Modern nanoscience approaches the atomic scale: Individual atoms, rather than ensembles, carry the functionalities of man-made devices for switching, information storing and -calculating, or catalyzing. While single-atom imaging is routine since the advent of the STM in the 1980ies, their chemical identification is difficult. My interdisciplinary ERC consolidator project, Single atom radio frequency fingerprinting (SARF), project develops a “6th sense” that turns the STM from an imaging- to an identification tool with atomic resolution.

Responsibilities: (1.) Operate & maintain two state-of-the art low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope systems. Both systems are equipped with high-frequency modulation of the junction bias voltage. One system is additionally equipped with a variable magnetic field at the STM junction of up to several Tesla. (2.) Assist in supervising PhD students. (3.) Publish your results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Required skills: (1.) Strong background in low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. (2.) Proactive, self-driven, enthusiastic and talented experimental physicist. (3.) Excellent scientific English (written and oral).

Teaching duties: None. If requested by the successful candidate, teaching is possible, as well.
