Modern nanoscience approaches the atomic scale: Individual atoms, rather than ensembles, carry the functionalities of man-made devices for switching, information storing and -calculating, or catalyzing. While single-atom imaging is routine since the advent of the STM in the 1980ies, their chemical identification is difficult. The ERC consolidator grant 771193 (SARF) develops a “6th sense” that turns the STM from an imaging- to an identification tool with atomic resolution.
(1.) Strong background in low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy.
(2.) Proactive, self-driven, enthusiastic and talented experimental physicist.
(3.) Excellent scientific English (written and oral).
(4.) Team player.
(1.) Operate two state-of-the art low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope systems. Both systems are equipped with high-frequency modulation of the junction bias voltage. One system is additionally equipped with a variable magnetic field at the STM junction of up to several Tesla.
(2.) Supervise PhD students.
(3.) Publish your results in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
