Duties and Responsibilities

Applications are invited for a 36-month PhD Studentship (Early Stage Researcher) fully funded by the H2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action and available from September 2019. The successful candidate will be based in the Department of Chemistry at UCL and be registered as a PhD student at UCL. The successful candidate will also go on secondments (lasting 1 to 3 months) to different teams of the ActiveMatter Consortium.

The specific goal for the ESR will be to study the emergence of spatial and temporal collective behaviours in the motion of a finite number of active microscopic particles (colloids) in an optically-induced potential landscape. The ESR will combine active colloids with engineered optical potentials to study how active particles move and develop collective synergistic or antagonistic behaviours in complex environments.

This combination of optical potentials, controllable interactions and active colloids will offer a very flexible and highly tunable model system to test general hypotheses of collective behaviour in active matter systems at many different length scales, from the self-assembly and the transport of single molecules within living cells to the macroscopic world of animal and robot foraging in patchy environments to the gathering and dispersal of individuals in human crowds.

This is an exciting opportunity for a student with a strong background in physical sciences to tackle one of the biggest problems in modern science.

The starting date for the contract is expected to be 23rd September 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.


Key Requirements

The successful candidate must demonstrate eligibility according to the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions[1] eligibility requirements as an Early-Stage Researcher (ESR). At the date of recruitment[2], the candidate must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. A Master degree (MSc or MChem) in Physics, Chemistry or related area as well as knowledge of modern research techniques in Soft Matter is essential, while some expertise in active matter and/or optical manipulation is highly desirable. The applicant can be of any nationality, but must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the date of recruitment[3].

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.

[2] The first day of employment of the Fellow for the purposes of the project (i.e. the starting date indicated in the employment /fellowship contract or equivalent direct contract).

[3] Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.
