- Attend the archaeological excavation (Oakes Bay 1 and HdCi-20 sites, Nain area, Labrador) scheduled for 2019 and project meetings
- Study the osteological material found in excavations and that available at the Danish National Museum in Copenhagen.
- Write scientific articles.

As part of the InterArctic RNA, the recruited candidate will participate in the study of human-environment interactions (vulnerability, resilience, adaptation) in the Arctic and sub-Arctic areas. The project will focus in particular on the last millennium and the issue of Thule migration and cultural interactions between the last Dorset and first Thule in Canada, and between the first Thule and Norse in Greenland. This work will be done by studying: 1) Thule sites containing Norse objects, 2) Norse settlements, as well as 3) sites potentially presenting both types of settlement but whose chronology needs to be reviewed (in particular in terms of contemporary occupation). The study of the bone industry will be the basis for this study.

The position is based at the Chrono-environment Laboratory (University of Franche-Comté) which has 300 staff, including 125 permanent staff. The person recruited will be integrated among the researchers of the SOPAST Theme (SOciété et environnement du PASsé) which brings together the archaeologists and palaeoenvironmentalists of the laboratory, and placed under the responsibility of the theme coordinator and the ANR InterArctic (Emilie Gauthier). Much of the work will be done at the Copenhagen Museum because the collections are not movable.

Eligibility criteria

- Good experience of prehistoric archaeological excavation.
- Perfect knowledge of the Arctic and paleo-eskimo archaeology, Thule.
- Knowledge of Norse archaeology.
- Proven experience in bone material determination and archaeozoological analysis.
