The Early Stage Researcher (ESR) positions (PhD studentships) are available for 36 months from April 2019 onwards within the European Joint Doctorate ED-ARCHMAT (http://www.ed-archmat-ejd.eu/).

Agricultural practices and environmental changes in the Phoenician-Punic Western Mediterranean during 8-5th century BC: a novel multidisciplinary approach.

Objectives

The main objective of this project is to understand the changes occurring in Sardinia and Portugal with the arrival of the Phoenician-Punic merchants during the period spanning the 8th-5th centuries BC. An investigation into the agricultural strategies (husbandry practices and land management) and the environmental changes will be conducted in selected archaeological sites of Sardinia and Portugal. Stable isotopes (C, N, O, Sr) analysis of zoo-osteological materials (bone and teeth) of wild fauna and livestock will be combined with the archaeobotanical record (pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs analysis, charcoal, seeds and plant macro remains) of the studied sites, to investigate the way of life of the populations, using a novel multidisciplinary approach.

 

Expected results:

  • Investigate diet and mobility of livestock during 8-5th century BC in Sardinia and Portugal.
  • Investigate environmental changes during 8-5th century BC in Sardinia and Portugal.
  • Access crop choices and land management practices in the different archaeological sites studied and relate them with the environmental conditions and husbandry practices.
  • Identify possible climate changes influencing agricultural practices and land use.

Contextualize the data obtained in the studied archaeological sites with available information for the same historical period around the Mediterranean area

Benefits

Salary and other benefits for the ESR are according to EU-standards for Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions and national regulations including a living allowance, a mobility allowance and a family allowance when applicable.

Each ESR will also have a Research and Training allowance which will be managed through the University Host. This will cover the participation of researchers in training activities;

  • expenses related to research costs;
  • tuition fees (where applicable).
  • Visa, residency card for the recruited researcher and their family (where applicable)

A mobility allowance is also available. This will contribute to mobility related expenses of the ESR.

Eligibility criteria

At the date of enrolment (the first day of the employment of the ESR for the purposes of the action i.e. the starting date indicated in the employment contract or equivalent direct contract) by ED-ARCHMAT applicants she/he:

  • must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience measured from the date when the researcher obtained the degree entitling her/him to embark on a doctorate) of their research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree;
  • may not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their recruiting organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the start of the project. Short stays such as holidays and/or compulsory national services not taken into account.

The closing date for the position ESR13 will be 28th February 2019, but applications will continue to be considered until suitable candidates have been appointed. Students will all receive a confirmation of reception. Short listed students will be contacted to arrange an interview over internet. Following interviews, the first place candidate will be invited for enrolment and a reserve list of candidates will be held until each position is filled. The successful candidate will have one week from the communication to accept or decline.

To be considered for admission, applicants must hold at the time of the enrolment a Bachelor and a Master Degree with a minimal combined total of 240 European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) in one of the areas indicated under each individual ESR projects, as listed at http://www.ed-archmat-ejd.eu.

Proof of evidence for degree titles: Self-certification and copies of original documents are accepted during selection of the ESRs, but original documentation will be required to be presented at the time of the enrolment.

Successful candidates will be enrolled for their PhD study in the University of the primary and secondary supervisors, linked to the ESR 13 project, and in accordance with the procedures stipulated in the individual University webpages

Selection process

The recruitment will be based on the requested documents including the CV and motivation letter and recommendation letters from two personal referees followed by an interview for short listed candidates.

The recruitment will be in accordance with the European Charter and Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers. It will follow an open, transparent, impartial, equitable and merit-based procedure.

  3. A curriculum vitae.
  4. A certificate of English proficiency (at the time of enrolment), may be required for those applicants whose first language is not English by certain Universities.
  5. The official transcripts and marks achieved during both Bachelor and Master phases of previous degrees.
  6. Two reference letters together with detailed contact information of the recommending persons.

  • 8 HEIs with multidisciplinary leading experts in CH and Archaeometry from different fields such as Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Biology, Material Science, Archaeology, Archaeometry, History of Art, Communication and Computer Systems.
  • 2 European and 2 non-European Museums
  • 2 International Research Centers on Conservation and Material Science
  • 2 SME’s active in the Conservation sector.
  • 1 Economical and Technological Pole dedicated to promotion of entrepreneurship in Culture, Heritage and Conservation Science
  • 2 Management and Business NGOs and Civil Society Organizations (WATCH World Association for the protection of Tangible and Intangible Cultural Heritage in Time of Armed conflict)
  • 1 Governmental Institutions in Cultural Heritage

 

The common goal of all ED-ARCHMAT Consortium members is to create a sustainable, interdisciplinary, intersectoral learning network/platform which will act as a reference point for ESRs well beyond the successful completion of their PhD project, guiding them right through the early stages of their professional careers in the field of Conservation Science/Archaeometry/Cultural Heritage.

 

The goal will be achieved through co-supervising 13 ESRs each with two beneficiary HEIs delivering

double doctoral (PhD) degrees in a multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral network to develop a generation of internationally equipped scientists for the global workplace

 

The 13 Early Stage Researchers, ESRs, employed by ED-ARCHMAT beneficiaries will form a new generation of Conservation Science professionals equipped with transdisciplinary key knowledge, competences and skills as defined in the European Qualification Framework (EQF)] spanning different sectors such as Physical and Chemical Science, Cultural Heritage, Conservation, Archaeology, Museology, Art History, Project Management, IT.

 

The ESRs will participate in international secondments to other organizations within the ED-ARCHMAT network and in outreach activities targeted at a wide audience.
