For our innovation project on fibre reinforced 3D printed plastics, SPITZNER ENGINEERS GmbH is recruiting a highly motivated and application-oriented postdoctoral researcher to develop specialized knowledge about fibre reinforced 3D printed plastics for the aviation industry.

We are a well established company in the aviation industry and we are specialized in the design and dimensioning of lightweight structures made of composites, especially CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastics) and modern metal alloys. Design, calculation, aerodynamics and also electric heating systems are our main areas of expertise. Starting with the idea generation and registration worldwide rights, we develop innovative and intelligent products, carry out the required admission tests and aid on the way to certification in accordance with international standards.

We are now searching for a PhD to support our innovative R&D activities for the application of fibre reinforced plastics in the field of aviation. Specifically, we are looking for a researcher to:

You will perform a detailed material research in the area of 3D-printed plastics. All relevant production parameters need to be identified and evaluated.

According to these data, you will create a parametric FE-model and perform a verification of testing methods. The validation will end in a model finalization and guideline for ISO9100 conformity design, calculation and production.

The project will also be supported by the Technical University Hamburg and the HAW Hamburg, to ensure high quality academic outcomes. While the project is limited to 12 months, there is a definite opportunity for long-term employment at SPITZNER ENGINEERS following the project. This project is conditional to the awarding to the European SME Innovation Associate Programme (IAP) (INNOSUP-02-2019-2020) grant, which will cover a competitive salary for the selected candidate. Relocation cost will be covered under the IAP grant. 

SPITZNER ENGINEERS will give support for e.g. visa applications or apartment search.

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before appointment under the project.

Selection process

This position is expected to be funded by H2020 European SME innovation Associate - pilot funding. 

The selection process is as below:

Step 1: Interested candidates are required to email their CV along with a one-page motivational letter to Alexandra Heinrich (info@spitzner-engineers.de) before August 31st 2019 17:00h CET

Step 2: Applications will be reviewed, and selected candidates will be shortlisted and notified as soon as possible.

Step 3: The proposal for European SME innovation Associate - pilot call (INNOSUP-02-2019-2020) is evaluated by the Commission and results announced.

Step 4: Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews.

Step 5: Final selected candidate will be notified shortly after the interviews.

Step 6: The candidate will be offered the research contract subject to the proposal being approved for funding with a tentative starting date of 2nd September 2019.

Skills/Qualifications

  • You have successfully completed a PhD degree in mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering
  • You may have 1-3 years of professional experience
  • Experience in the use of fiber-reinforced plastics is desirable
  • You are familiar with CATIA V5 and FE-calculation models
  • You convince your conversation partners with fluent English or German
  • Practical assessment and team spirit are your skills

Specific Requirements

  • You are familiar with Python programming or similar
  • You have creativity and organizational thinking
