The DFG Research Training Group (RTG) 2485
‘Virus detection, pathogenesis and intervention’ (VIPER)
offers 28 doctoral researcher positions to commence in April 2019
VIPER aims at training next generation scientists to tackle complex health issues caused by emerging and re-emerging viruses using an inter-disciplinary approach. The VIPER research projects are subdivided into three pillars: (i) virus discovery, host range and transmission, (ii) virus-host cell interactions and pathogenesis, and (iii) immune interference and intervention strategies. VIPER will for the first time combine the long-term veterinary expertise in virology, pathology, clinic and wildlife research at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover (TiHo). The Twincore Center for Experimental and Clinical Infection Research in Hannover and three leading partner institutions outside of Hannover (Heinrich-Pette-Institute Hamburg, Ruhr University Bochum and Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich) will further provide the participating students with opportunities to advance their scientific and collaborative skills, and promote their mobility and scientific independence. The VIPER research framework will represent the core element of the training program, and will be incorporated into the Hannover Graduate School of Veterinary Pathobiology, Neuroinfectiology and Translational Medicine (HGNI) of the TiHo and will lead to the academic degree of a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
The HGNI offers top-level research, education and training by program specific seminars as well as an individualized curriculum comprising lab and soft-skill courses, congresses, symposia and summer schools. Communication and teaching language throughout HGNI is English. Upon graduation students are awarded a PhD – life and natural scientists may alternatively choose a Dr. rer. nat.
The RTG VIPER aims at highly motivated postgraduates with a background in Veterinary Medicine, Medicine, or Life Sciences. We are looking for enthusiastic candidates of all nationalities who have a keen interest in virology and molecular work. Excellent written and spoken English skills are required.
