O Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa (Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon) invites candidates to apply for two Grants as Research Assistant (BI). The Grants will be awarded within the framework of “TRANSRIGHTS - Gender citizenship and sexual rights in Europe: Transgender lives from a transnational perspective” (615594), funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and coordinated by Dr Sofia Aboim.

Contract duration

12 months, with 3 months of probation period contingent on a satisfactory performance, starting from March 1st 2019

Pay scale

Salaries range from 745,00€ (for candidates with a BA) to 980,00€ (for candidates with a completed Masters degree) per month, according to the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) Research Grants pay scale (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.pt). Grants include the payment of personal accident insurance and voluntary social insurance. Please note that this grant is not taxable.

Workplace

The work will be developed on the premises of: Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa), and other places considered necessary for the execution of the work plan, under the scientific supervision of the Principal Investigator.

 

Eligibility criteria

Mandatory requirements:

  1. A BA (licenciatura) or Master degree in Sociology;
  2. Proficiency in Portuguese and English;
  3. Basic training in qualitative methodologies;
  4. Interest and availability to work in the field of gender inequality and to develop research analysis about gender minorities, immigrant populations, institutional actors and policies in Portugal and the four other countries covered by the project (UK, France, Sweden and the Netherlands);

Valued requirements:

  1. Previous work in the fields of gender and/or inequalities;
  2. Research experience in qualitative and quantitative methods;
  3. Experience in managing websites and social media contents;
  4. Research experience with document and policy analysis.

Application

Candidates are invited to submit their application by sending the following documents:

  1. Detailed Curriculum Vitae (in English);
  2. Personal statement (in English, 2 pages maximum), in which the candidate is expected to explain the reasons for applying, as well as future career plans;
  3. Any publications, academic papers or other relevant documents (such as master thesis or ongoing chapters) authored by the candidate;
  4. Names and contact details of two recommenders;
  5. Copy (or number, place and date of emission or the validity) of the passport/identity card and NIF (fiscal identification number);
  6. Copy of the BA or Master certificate and other documents considered relevant.

Evaluation criteria and selection – Selection will be based on applicants’ experience and evidence of research ability, and if deemed necessary, through an interview of selected candidates. The evaluation and selection procedure will be carried out by a jury of ICS-ULisboa researchers: Chair – Dr Sofia Aboim; Panel members – Dr Pedro Vasconcelos and Dr Filipe Carreira da Silva. The evaluation and selection panel will produce a classification order according to the following criteria:

  • CV evaluation – 50%;
  • Personal statement – 10%;
  • Interview: 40%

The selection jury may however decide not to proceed to the interview stage. In that case, the CV evaluation will account for 80% of the final score, and the personal statement for the remaining 20%.

Specific Requirements

The Research Grants awarded by the TRANSRIGHTS project involve the following tasks within the framework of the project’s research plan and under the PI’s direct supervision:

  1. Analysing qualitative data;
  2. Analysing documents, policies and media data;
  3. Organizing data-sets and data bases;
  4. Participation and support in the management of project meetings;
  5. Participation in the project’s publishing strategy, including reports and others;
  6. Any other task that may reasonably arise, related to the full implementation of the TRANSRIGHTS project, and defined by the project coordinator.

The selected grant-holders will work under the supervision of the PI of the project: Dr. Sofia Aboim.
