We are looking for a highly-motivated and enthusiastic candidate for a PhD student position in the interdisciplinary project ”Single-biomolecule optical sensors based in DNA origami”. This position is available in the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Science in Warsaw, Poland, and funded by the Foundation for Polish Science within the HOMING program.

Project leader: Dr. Izabela Kamińska.

The main goal of the project is the detection of single DNA of viruses. We will fabricate sensors based on self-assembled structures based on DNA origami, as well as metallic nanostructures and graphene. The precise control of the spatial arrangement of all elements allows the use of their unique properties, for example metallic nanostructures for the enhancement of the signal (fluorescence) of single molecules. This project is a contribution to very exciting fields of nanotechnology, biosensors, plasmonics or nanophotonics.

Key responsibilities include:

1. Design and preparation of DNA origami structures.

2. Synthesis of metallic nanostructures and their application together with DNA origami in the fabrication of sensors.

3. Fabrication of hybrid nanostructures composed on DNA origami and graphene.

4. Measurements of single molecules on fluorescence confocal microscope, in order to characterize the optical properties of fabricated hybrid nanostructures and their potential application in the detection of single DNA of viruses.

Benefits

We offer a scholarship (18 months) for a PhD student 4000 PLN per month.

Possibility of further employment/scholarship to complete Doctoral Studies.

Career development benefits:

Work in outstanding institution, with modern research laboratories,

Close cooperation with the reputable international expert across DNA nanotechnology and single-molecule studies Prof. Philip Tinnefeld,

Research visits in the group of Prof. Philip Tinnefeld at LMU Munich in Germany,

Participation in international conferences,

Pursuing PhD degree.

Eligibility criteria

The Commission will take into account the following criteria:

a) competences of candidates for specific tasks in a research project,

b) previous scientific achievements of candidates,

c) awards and distinctions of the candidate resulting from the conducted research.

The commission evaluates applications on a point scale.

Position will be awarded to the person who obtains the highest number of points.

Selection process

The competition will be perform in accordance with the regulations of the Foundation of Polish Science and the HOMING program documentation: HOMING 4/2018.

The recruitment procedure:

1) submission of the documents.

• A scan or photocopy of the candidate's university MSc degree

• Motivation letter with the description of scientific interests

• A list of publications of the candidate's research work

• List of research projects in which the candidate participated

• Information about any fellowships, awards

• Consent to the processing of the candidate's personal data for the purposes of the competition (the form will be available on web site: http://ichf.edu.pl/RODO_doktorant_PhD-student_FNP_zgoda.doc

• NOTE: Applications without a complete set of documents, including consent to the processing of personal data, will not be considered.

2) Candidates need to take an entry exam for the International Doctoral Studies (MSD) at the IPC PAS and submit proper documents to IPC PAS http://ichf.edu.pl/msd/IDS_required_documents.pdf before 12.01.2019. Only persons who pass the exam for the Doctoral

Studies at the IPC PAS with a positive grade, are going to be eligible candidates. The exam will be held on 25.01.2019. A description of the course of study can be found at: http://ichf.edu.pl/msd/ The candidates, who are already enrolled in MSD program at the IPC PAS do not need to retake the entry exam.

3) Interview.

After the positively passed exam of the PhD Studies at the Polish Academy of Sciences, the candidates will be invited for an interview with the Competition Committee appointed by the Principal Investigator. Good command of English is required.

Representative of the Foundation of Polish Science may participate in the interview recruitment as an observer.
