European Training Network Positions in H2020 ITN NanoCarb

A call for 15 PhD positions is open in the recently granted Marie Curie European Training Network (MC-ETN) project NanoCarb - Glyco-Nanoparticles for Applications in Advanced Nanomedicine. NanoCarb is a multidisciplinary consortium including Universities, research centres and SMEs with broad expertise ranging from Nanotechnology, Carbohydrate Chemistry, Glycobiology and in vitro/in vivo screenings. The network will develop novel and well-characterised nanomaterials with synthetic and native glycans that will be used for therapeutics and guide development of new drug delivery applications. The project will train Early Stage Researchers (ESR) at the interface of nanotechnology and glycosciences, with the overall goal of achieving a new generation of professionals in nanomedicine for a prospective career in both academia and industry. For further information on the project please go to www.nanocarb.eu.

The successful candidates will benefit from an international scientific network of high-profile academic and industry partners offering state-of-the-art research facilities in nanotechnology, carbohydrate chemistry, glycoprofiling and in vitro/in vivo screening as well as career relevant training through research, courses, outreach activities, participation in seminar, and workshops. An ambitious training plan will be implemented including courses, outreach activities, participation in seminars and workshops for the development of scientific and transferable skills. Each ESR will be supervised by an Industry-Academia supervisory team consisting of at least one supervisor from each sector. ESRs will receive an attractive salary in accordance with the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) regulations for ESR  http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/.

Positions

A PhD position is available in the research group of Dr. Paolo Bigini, director of the Nanobiology Unit at the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Researchers - IRCCS.  The research project is highly multidisciplinary and the student will have the opportunity to follow the whole path of nano-bio interaction, from biological fluids to the living mammals. In this context, the student will gain knowledge in chemistry, cell biology, pharmacology, neuropathology, to develop new therapeutic tools in nanomedicine. The courses will be part of the PhD program in “Converging Technologies for Biomolecular Systems (TeCSBi)” at the Department of Biotechnology and Biosciences at the University of Milan Bicocca.

The project seeks to find a highly motivated student to carry out preclinical evaluations of nanoparticles modified with biocompatible polymers in small rodents. In particular, the candidate will evaluate the NP organ distribution, their accumulation, the clearance and the passage of biological barriers in both healthy and ischemic mice [1-3]. Innovative methods of preclinical imaging will be applied to track the fate of NPs. This study will be mainly carried out at the Mario Negri Institute, but the candidate will also follow  the synthesis and characterization of NPs, the basic mechanism of interaction with different molecules and the corona formation with two secondments in the chemistry department of Royal College of Surgeaon of Ireland (RCSI), in Dublin, under the supervision of Dr Monopoli and at the Vlaamse Instelling voor Technologisch Onderzoek (VITO) Research Institute, in Belgium, under the supervision of Dr Nelissen.

The candidate will commit to carry out an independent and original scientific research, to report the research findings to the supervisor verbally but also in the form of written report (1 per year) and to be assessed on a yearly based to test the advances in specific competencies, necessary for the PhD advancement and to do a final viva exam at the end of the 3rd year.
