OFFER DESCRIPTION
We are pleased to advertise 15 Early-Stage Researcher PhD positions in “New RAN TEchniques for 5G UltrA-dense Mobile networks” - TeamUp5G, H2020 funded project that begin in January 2019. These are part of Marie-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) of the European Commission (read more on MSCA ITN ETNs). These PhD positions are considered quite prestigious, as they allow the PhD candidates to be exposed to and to interact with, early on, an entire network of Universities and companies that collaborate on the inter-disciplinary topics of the project.
In TeamUp5G we believe that motivation from involvement and engagement is a key to learning. We want to place creative young researchers in front of the real world, enabling them to work on real-life technical issues, working across multiple European countries and organizations, presenting at workshops in front of industrial users/stakeholders, and becoming involved in standardization activities and secondments at academic as well as industrial partners.
About TeamUp5G project
With the continuous increase of data rates and the number of people using mobile communications, wireless connections are evolving towards 5G. To fulfil the user satisfaction and a plethora of challenging requirements, pivotal to the evolution towards 5G are the ultra-dense networks (UDN) with small-cells (SCs). Nowadays, although there is a worldwide market of SCs, the network solutions have inherent technical limitations, e.g., limited available spectrum, the need to coexist within complex environments of multiple heterogeneous technologies and users. Possibly the most important challenge is the demand of increasing data rates per km2. Indeed, nowadays SCs are mostly plug-and-play devices that are connected to the core network through an existing DSL line that forms the backhaul. For this reason, femto-cells (FCs), very small cells that are installed today, have very-limited cooperation, as communication between them is imperfect, if feasible at all. The “New RAN TEchniques for 5G UltrA-dense Mobile networks” (TeamUp5G) consortium strongly believes that it is possible to leverage the backhaul, enhancing the overall network performance.
The research objectives of TeamUp5G are focused on solving the following three problems:
- Interference Management, waveforms and Massive MIMO (mMIMO)
- Dynamic Spectrum Management and Optimisation
- Energy Consumption Reduction
We will propose metrics and develop energy-aware algorithms and protocols to enhance Small Cells in ultra-dense deployments, making use of massive antenna solutions (mMIMO), millimeter wave (mmW) bands and visual light communications (VLC), in relevant scenarios, through a combination of analytical work, simulation and prototyping.
The global objective of the TeamUp5G training network program is to set up an inter-national doctoral training network for interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral research, and knowledge and training sharing, to team up a new generation of researchers and entrepreneurs ready to address complex engineering problems and innovation that are required to work both at university and the industry. To that aim, TeamUp5G includes:
- To guide and support ESRs through excellent supervision and with the support of a Personalized Career Development Plan.
- To provide to ESRs first-hand industry experience by offering training opportunities in relevant industry organizations through secondments.
- To provide the ESRs with excellent technical training and with training to develop transferrable skills such as entrepreneurship, project management, team work and knowledge transfer skills.
The consortium includes both academic and non-academic sectors and provides inter-sectoral and inter-disciplinary training for the researchers in their areas of expertise. Cooperation between academic and industrial partners will be used to experience both environments, to promote the transfer of the obtained research results and to prepare the younger academicians towards innovative and practical solutions.
The positions will be hosted at the following institutions:
- Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) – 3PhD positions: ESR1, ESR2, ESR3
- Instituto de Telecomunicações – 5PhD positions: ESR4/IT-Lisbon, ESR6/ IT-Aveiro, ESR7/ IT-Covilhã, ESR8/ IT-Aveiro, ESR14/ IT-Lisbon
