General framework

A call for 15 PhD positions (Early Stage Researchers [ESRs]) is open in the recently granted Marie Curie European Training Network (MC-ETN) project NanoCarb - Glyco-Nanoparticles for Applications in Advanced Nanomedicine. NanoCarb is a multidisciplinary consortium including universities, research centres and SMEs with broad expertise ranging from Nanotechnology, Carbohydrate Chemistry, Glycobiology and in vitro/in vivo screening specialists. The network will develop novel and well-characterised nanomaterials with synthetic and native glycans that will be used for therapeutics and guide development of new drug delivery applications. The project will train early stage researchers at the interface of nanotechnology and glycosciences, with the overall goal of achieving a new generation of professionals in nanomedicine for a prospective career in both academia and industry. The successful candidates will profit of an international scientific network of high profile academic and industry partners and will receive excellent training in the form of hands-on-instructions, training through research. An ambitious training plan will be implemented including courses, outreach activities, participation in seminar, and workshops for the development of scientific and transferable skills.

Furthermore, each ESR will be supervised by an Industry-Academia supervisory team consisting of at least one supervisor from each field. ESRs will receive an attractive salary in accordance with the MSCA regulations for Early Stage Researchers http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/.

 

Position

A three-year PhD position, is available on the project “Glycan-coated nanoparticles as inhibitors of specific lectins, a new neuroprotective therapeutic strategy for brain injury caused by ischemia”.

This project is focused on the identification of glycan-coated nanoparticles capable to interact with high affinity with specific lectins involved in the lectin pathway of complement system, e.g. mannose-binding lectins and ficolins. These lectins have recently been suggested as potential targets for neuroprotective therapeutic strategies for ischemic brain injury [1-4], and the present project aims to test this working hypothesis by in vitro and preclinical studies. 

These studies will be mainly carried out at the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research, Milan, Italy, under the supervision of Dr. Marco Gobbi, head of the laboratory of Pharmacodynamics and Pharmacokinetics, and Dr. Maria Grazia De Simoni, head of the laboratory of  Inflammation and Nervous System Diseases.

Two secondments are planned, in both academic and industry environments.

The research project is highly multidisciplinary where the scholar will have the opportunity to gain knowledge in glycan chemistry, biochemistry, neuropharmacology, neuroimmunology, by developing and assessing smart nanoparticles for applications in nanomedicine.

The candidate will commit to carry out an independent and original scientific research, to report the research findings to the supervisor verbally and in the form of written report (1 per year) and to be assessed on a yearly based to test the advances in specific competencies, necessary for the PhD advancement and to do a final viva exam at the end of the 3rd year.

Eligibility criteria

Eligible applicants must have less than 4 years research experience (Early Stage Researcher) and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.

Mobility rule: The applicants should not have resided or carried out main activity (studies, work, etc.) in Italy for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to the recruitment date.

Selection process

The applicant must send the following documents (if possible included in a single zipped file attachment) to Dr. Marco Gobbi (marco.gobbi@marionegri.it) and Dr. Maria Grazia De Simoni (mariagrazia.desimoni@marionegri.it) within 15 January 2019, clearly indicating in the subject “Application for ESR13 position”:

1) Up-to-date Curriculum vitae;

2) Names and contact details of three referees (this may include previous supervisors);

3) A letter giving reason for his/her motivation for the post (max. 1 page);

4) the scan of the Master Degree which would formally entitle him/her to embark on a doctorate. In case the degree has not been obtained yet, it is necessary to send a declaration of the university stating that the degree will be obtained before the expected starting date (see below);

5) a document indicating his/her ranking and marks within his/her last year at his/her Master Degree as well as the courses/modules they have attended (optional). This document is mandatory for applicants who do not have yet obtained the degree.

6) a summary of the Master Degree thesis or a brief description of the past scientific activity (this can also be included in the CV).

 

IMPORTANT NOTE: The applicants must assure their availability to start the PhD programme not later than April 1st 2019.
