The Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN) “DuRSAAM - PhD Training Network on Durable, Reliable and Sustainable Structures with Alkali-Activated Materials” funded by the European Commission (H2020) invites applications for 1 full-time Early Stage Researcher (ESR) PhD position, with a minimum duration of 36 months, starting on 1 June 2019 (possibly a little later), within the framework of a financially attractive research contract (salary €2900.49/mo, mobility allowance €600/mo, family allowance €250/mo).

The research project will provide a fundamental understanding of the fire behavior of: (a) fiber-reinforced and fiber-reinforced high-performance concrete made of alkali-activated materials (AAM) (instead of ordinary portland cement); (b) reinforced concrete and masonry retrofitted with thin textile-based overlays (textile reinforced mortars – TRM) made of alkali-activated materials. The work will combine experiments (including fire tests) on structural elements, with numerical and analytical modeling.

PhD candidates applying for this position must (at the time of recruitment) be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and not yet have a doctoral degree. Researchers can be of any nationality (including Greek) and are required to undertake trans-national mobility; they will have to reside mainly in Patras and to spend roughly 6 months at the University of Gent. Researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Greece for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to the start date of their employment. The successful applicant will be awarded a joint PhD from the University of Patras and Gent University.

Applicants should demonstrate evidence of the following: strong educational background in structural engineering (MSc or equivalent – e.g. Diploma - in Civil and/or Structural Engineering), effective communication skills in English, both written and verbal, report writing skills and experience of delivering presentations, team working.
