Seeking for a highly motivated master student to join Project Sea, Sand and People. An Environmental History of Coastal Dunes. The project aims to explore human-environment relation in coastal areas worldwide, since the 18th century until today. Based on selected case-studies and comparative approaches, the project will cross qualitative and quantitative data from both the Humanities and Social Sciences with the Physical and Life Sciences, to produce innovative holistic knowledge about the dunes.

The position (Doctoral Fellow), funded by a Starting Grant from the European Research Council, is initially available for one year and is renewable up to the end of the 5 years of the project.

The work consists in collecting quantitative and qualitative data and doing research on coastal dunes, maritime forests, coastal dynamic, coastal management and other issues relevant, in several EU and Non-EU countries. And contributing to the scientific outputs and dissemination activities of the project. Since the research tasks will be developed in a collaboratively interdisciplinary environment, the candidate is expected to learn the basic concepts and methodologies needed to do historical research.

 

The optimal candidate would have: (1) a Master in one of these areas: Geosciences, Forestry, Environment, Territory or Architecture. (2) knowledge and practice in GIS tools; (3) Some experience in publication in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes. (4) Capability to report writing to deadlines, produce scientific papers and make presentations at scientific and non-specialists’ events.

Fluent English (written and spoken) is required.

Knowledge of other languages, such as Portuguese, Spanish, French or German, will be an advantage.

Salary will be in accordance with the Portuguese Science Foundation salary scale, specifically 980€ per month (net) (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores), paid by bank transfer.

Ensurance (Seguro Social Voluntário and Seguro de Acidentes Pessoais) costs are supported by the employer.

Acceptance of the fellowship entails that the respective functions will be performed in exclusivity (Art. 5 of the Research Fellowship Holder Statute).
