 There is one Pos-Doc position, with a scholarship of six-month duration and expected to start in December/2018-January/2019. The scholarship is under the scope of a Thematic Project with funding from the Sao Paulo Research Foundation -- FAPESP, entitled "ELECTROCATALYSIS V: Electrocatalytic Processes of Chemical and Electrical Energy Interconversion" (grant number 2013/16930). The selected candidate will be performing research for the development of the following project: "Electrochemistry of ethanol, glycerol and other Cn organic molecules" (supervised by Prof. Dr. Germano Tremiliosi-Filho -- germano@iqsc.usp.br).

About the project

The research aims to perform fundamental studies especially on the mechanistic aspects of the electro-oxidation reactions of ethanol, glycerol, and other organic molecules Cn on well-defined single crystal surfaces. It also contemplates the synthesis and characterization of nanostructured electrocatalysts formed by the combination of metals and oxides of noble metals and non-noble catalysts for the oxidation reactions of ethanol, glycerol, and other organic molecules Cn, with and without photon assistance. These electrocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic studies, in a fundamental level, will involve quantitative determination of the reaction intermediates and products by in situ FTIR spectroscopy, liquid and ion chromatographies. The investigations will include correlations between electrocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic activity and the stability of both the composition and the structure of the nanoparticle. If there is enough time applied studies will be carried out in a PEM type unitary fuel cell using electrodes of 5 cm² feed with ethanol or glycerol at the anode and oxygen at the cathode, for evaluation of current density and energy efficiency. Current distribution measurements will be made in order to improve the conditions of preparation of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA), with the focus on the cell operation conditions. These studies will also involve the quantitative determination of the reaction products using techniques such as mass spectrometry, gas, liquid and ion chromatographies. These operational studies on fuel cells with and without UV light assistance will be carried out on the most active electrocatalysts and photoelectrocatalysts investigated in the previous stages.


Candidates must demonstrate previous experience in studies of electrocatalysis and/or photoelectrocatalysis with the aim of applications in fuel cells. Summary of the Thematic Project

This research project aims at studying the electrocatalytic processes related to electrochemical systems for the chemical and electrical energy interconversion, in galvanic and electrolytic devices. The main focus is associated to the study of reactions involved in electrocatalysis for fuel cells feed with organic and inorganic molecules, metal / air batteries, regenerative electrochemical systems, hydrogen production and electro-reduction of carbon dioxide. Some fundamental aspects of the electrocatalysis and kinetic instabilities of these reactions will be investigated on single crystals and nanostructured metal electrocatalysts. The investigations will include correlation between the electrocatalytic activities and stabilities with the composition and structure of the nanoparticles. Finally, operational electrochemical investigations will be made on operating systems built using the most active electrocatalysts investigated in the previous studies. The project will be conducted by a team composed of permanent members including 6 professors/researchers, 2 researchers, 2 scientific technicians and 40 temporary collaborators such as post-docs, PhD and master students, and undergraduate students, mostly from the Institute of Chemistry of Sao Carlos, USP.

This opportunity is open to candidates of any nationalities. The selected candidate will receive a FAPESP’s Post-Doctoral fellowship in the amount of R$ 7,373.10 monthly and a research contingency fund, equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the fellowship which should be spent in items directly related to the research activity.
