Marie Curie ITN Early Stage Researcher (ESR) – New perovskite materials and spectroscopic studies in perovskite components and devices

 

We are looking for a highly motivated and talented Early Stage Researcher to complement our team in the development of new perovskite materials and spectroscopic studies in perovskite components and devices. This project is related to the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network “MAking pErovskiteS TRuly explOitable– MAESTRO”. MAESTRO, a multi-site Training & Research Program funded by the European Commission (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2017), will tackle major challenges in the development of stable perovskite solar cells. This highly interdisciplinary Training Network is organized by seventeen (17) internationally leading European research groups [University of Bath (UK), Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IT), Universitat Jaume I de Castellon (ES),The chancellor, Masters and Scholars of the University of Oxford (UK), National Center for Scientific Research "Demokritos" (EL), Universita Degli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata (IT), Bar Ilan University (IL), Swansea University (UK), Universitat Konstanz (DE), Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (Switzerland), Oxford Photovoltaics Limited (UK), 3GSolar Photovoltaics Ltd (IL), Dyesol UK Ltd (UK), UAB Modernios E-Technologijos (LT), Saule sp. z o.o. (PL), Tiberlab SRL (IT), NPL Management Limited (UK)]. MAESTRO is strongly committed to promote breakthroughs at the frontiers of science and engineering. Our highly integrated approach to understanding degradation causes and proposing solutions will take a major step towards the commercialization of dye-sensitized solar cells. The training dimension of MAESTRO is reflected in the high priority that is given to the training of Early Stage Researchers through education and knowledge dissemination via tutorial courses, annual network meetings, training schools, conferences, and mobility programmes.

 

The European Training Network MAESTRO (MAking pErovskiteS TRuly explOitable) will generate new skills, knowledge and innovation in the exploitation of perovskite materials in solar power and efficient lighting through establishing exploitation paths for perovskite devices in an integrated unitary approach. MAESTRO is an intersectoral and multidisciplinary network of 10 academic and 7 industrial beneficiaries from 8 EU and Associated countries, including 2 countries in the EU-13. It focusses on perovskite semiconductors, a material shown in the last 4 years to have a major impact on solar power and potentially also in display technology. Our research aims to make perovskite based devices commercially viable. MAESTRO offers broad skills development and experience of cross sector research to 15 Early Stage Researchers, ESRs. Training is provided in (i) science and technology across physics, chemistry, materials science, electrical engineering, in two major application areas, solar cells and light emitting diodes, and other uses such as lasers and photodiodes; (ii) exploitation from laboratory to fabrication; (iii) transferable skills of communication, information technology, organization, planning, teamwork, leadership; (iv) skills needed for innovation, such as understanding markets, product life cycles, business models, return on investment. Gender aspects are addressed through supervisors, mentors and training. The research undertaken by MAESTRO will teach the ESRs how to deal with complexities and uncertainties, making them very broad and highly adaptable. Their PhDs will position them to be comfortable in both corporate and academic worlds. They will be able to seek careers that are rewarding professionally and financially, through career paths in self-employment, finance, consultancy, contracting, engineering, computer science, and production.

 

Description

This three-year project will focus on the synthesis of new perovskite materials (mainly lead-free) components development (layers with low toxicity solvents), device (perovskite solar cell) fabrication, characterization and aging. Advanced spectroscopy (micro-Raman, PL) will be used to characterize materials (mesoporous semiconductor, perovskite, hole transporting material) and corresponding interfaces, deduce changes linked with cell degradation and monitor in-situ deterioration. Photoelectrochemical techniques (I-V, photocurrent action spectra, EIS, IMPS, IMVS) will be used to identify changes in electron dynamics related to cell degradation.

The successful candidate will be enrolled at the National Centre of Scientific Research Demokritos. He/she will be supervised by Dr. Polycarpos Falaras (NCSR Demokritos). Besides the network meetings, training schools, conferences, etc briefly described above, he/she will also have the opportunity to visit and work in other research groups within the MAESTRO network. Successful completion of this project will produce a number of high impact publications and will lead to commercially interesting products.

Successful candidates will be employed for 30 months. Possible starting date: December 1st 2018.

 

Qualifications

Candidates applying for a PhD position (Early Stage Researcher, ESR) must hold a Master/Diploma degree in Chemistry, and/or Physics, and/or Physical Chemistry, and/or Materials Science, and/or Chemical Engineering, obtained not longer than four years ago at the time of appointment. Research experience in inorganic/organic synthesis, nanomaterials (semiconducting oxides, metal electrode, nanoparticles, graphene, …), thin layer deposition techniques, advanced spectroscopy, photoinduced processes, and device engineering (especially solar cells) is also highly desirable.

All applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organization (Greece) for more than 12 months within the last 3 years prior to the starting date of the employment. They should also have less than 4 years of research experience (after they obtained their M.Sc. degree). Researchers can be nationals of any country within or outside of the EU. Excellent knowledge of the English language (speaking and writing) is essential.
