A call for 15 PhD positions (Early Stage Researchers [ESRs]) is open in the recently granted Marie Curie European Training Network (MC-ETN) project NanoCarb - Glyco-Nanoparticles for Applications in Advanced Nanomedicine. NanoCarb is a multidisciplinary consortium including universities, research centres and SMEs with broad expertise ranging from nanotechnology, carbohydrate chemistry, glycoprofiling and in vitro/in vivo screening specialists. The network will develop novel and well-characterised nanomaterials with synthetic and native glycans that will be used for therapeutics and guide development of new drug delivery applications. The project will train early stage researchers at the interface of nanotechnology and glycosciences, with the overall goal of achieving a new generation of professionals in nanomedicine for a prospective career in both academia and industry. The successful candidates will benefit from an international scientific network of high-profile academic and industry partners offering state-of-the-art research facilities in nanotechnology, carbohydrate chemistry, glycoprofiling and in vitro/in vivo screening as well as career relevant training through research, courses, outreach activities, participation in seminar, and workshops. Each ESR will be supervised by an Industry-Academia supervisory team consisting of at least one supervisor from each sector. ESRs will receive an attractive salary in accordance with the MSCA regulations for Early Stage Researchers http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/.

Positions

Applications are invited for two chemistry-focused industrial PhD positions to work on Glycosylated gold nanoparticles and their biological interaction to be carried out under the supervision of Dr. Africa Barrientos at Midatech Pharma in Spain with the PhDs being awarded from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), in Dublin.  Midatech Pharma is an Oxfordshire-headquartered international specialty pharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercialising innovative products in oncology and other therapeutic areas. The company uses three technology platforms, including an ultrasmall gold nanoparticle technology for the targeted delivery, sustained release and formulation of anti-cancer agents within a number of poorly addressed diseases.

The two PhD projects will focus on the development of methodologies for the design, synthesis and evaluation of glycosylated gold nanoparticles as a means of targeted and enhanced drug delivery. Strong emphasis will be on the characterisation of the nanoparticles in terms of their physico-chemical properties as well as their biological interaction in collaboration with industrial and academic project partners. The research project is highly multidisciplinary, and the candidates will develop knowledge in synthetic organic, medicinal, analytical and surface chemistry, biomaterial science, cell biology, biochemistry and nanomedicine. During the PhD programme, the candidate will carry out secondments with an industry and academic partner and there will be ample opportunities to attend relevant symposia to support the training and scientific development of each PhD student.

Eligibility criteria

Marie Curie eligibility rules requires ESRs to have at most four years of research experience. To satisfy Marie Curie mobility criteria, you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the United Kingdom for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to the start data (short stays such as holidays and/or compulsory national service are not taken into account).

Skills/Qualifications

  • For the chemistry position: the ideal applicant will have a 1st Class Honours Bachelor’s degree or MSc degree (with minimum 2.1 honours from primary degree) in chemistry or related disciplines.

  • For the biology position: the ideal applicant will have a minimum of BSc 2.1 in Biological or Biochemical Science or equivalent.

  • Specific skills which would enhance a candidate’s application include experience in some of the following areas: For the chemistry position: synthetic organic and analytical chemistry, materials science, biomaterials. For the biology position experience in cell/biochemical assay development, with an understanding of methods used in the evaluation of nanomedicines would be advantageous Excellent written and oral communication skills as well as the ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team are also required for both positions. Due to the essential collaborative nature of the projects, it will be necessary to work for planned periods of time and to visit other sites in the UK and EU as necessary.

  • For candidates who do not speak English as their first language, IELTS or equivalent English language test scores of at least 6.5 is required. Applicants who do not hold a valid English certificate at the time of the application, must indicate a clear plan with dates of how they seek to obtain the certificate.

Specific Requirements

  • The applicants should be within the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.

  • Mobility rule: The applicants should not have resided or carried out main activity (studies, work, etc.) in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to the recruitment date.
