A PhD Scholarship in Fisheries Technology is available at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) with starting date December 2018.
The project will be carried out in the Fisheries Technology research group situated in Hirtshals, Denmark in affiliation to the Section for Ecosystem-based Management, Lyngby, Denmark. DTU Aqua is an institute at the Technical University of Denmark.
The purpose of DTU Aqua is to provide research, advice and education at the highest international level within the sustainable exploitation of living marine and freshwater resources, the biology of aquatic organisms and the development of ecosystems as well as their integration in ecosystem-based management. The institute has an international research staff comprising approx. 120 academic employees.
Commercial fisheries harvest large resources in the world oceans today and the demand for seafood will increase in the future. For these fisheries to be both economically and environmentally sustainable it is important that they are efficient in catching the species and sizes they target with a low amount of unwanted by-catch, and that these fishing activities are conducted with minimum impact on the surrounding environment.
Development of fisheries technological solutions is a key element to ensuring sustainable utilization of the seas’ resources and play a central role in most fisheries and fisheries management systems. The current implementation of the new Common Fisheries Policy in EU waters, which includes a landing obligation system, increases the importance of gear selectivity, an in particular more specialized designs in the fisheries. Unwanted, listed species and sizes can no longer be discarded and the catch of these will be counted against the vessels quota. The economy of individual vessels will therefore depend on their ability to avoid unwanted species and sizes during their fishing operations.
The PhD-project includes conducting research in relation to development, testing and documentation of selective gear designs, investigating the underlying behavioral and mechanical aspects governing species- and size selectivity and development of methods and operational strategies that can mitigate the shift to the landing obligation system, with the overall aim of sustaining an economical and environmental viable fishery. The project may include both laboratory, experimental and theoretical work and may apply and documenting effect of integrating new technologies in fishing gears. The specific contents of the project will be formulated in cooperation with the successful candidate reflecting the candidate’s qualifications, under the outline defined by externally funded projects and ongoing activities.
The candidate will join an active, international and cross-disciplinary research team. A significant part of the research and development activities is carried out in collaboration with the fishing and fishing gear industries.
We are looking for a candidate who has:
- Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Aquatic Science & Technology or similar.
- Previous experience in marine, aquatic or fisheries research
- Proficiency in written and spoken English
- Some experience in planning and conducting field work
- Keen interest in research and for working within the field of marine and aquatic sciences
- Mathematical or modelling skills will be advantageous
- Good co-operation abilities
Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
