SACSIS is selecting a competitive candidate for the Agroforestry and Genetics Science and Technology / ETSIAM research group University of Castilla - La Mancha (UCLM). Heat stress affect to reproductive performance of many productive species. Oocytes collected in the hot season are of lower quality than those collected in the winter expressed by reduced oocyte maturation and developmental competence. This decreased oocyte competence seems to be caused by alterations in the mitochondria functioning. Heat stress impairs the expression of mitochondrion-associated genes, affecting the ATP production and increasing the reactive oxygen species (ROS) damaging the DNA. In addition, the oxidative stress impairs DNA methylation being able to transmit the epigenetic disorders to the offspring. To address to the effect of heat stress on oocyte developmental competence, the fellow will join to project currently developed in the animal reproduction biology group. A combination of state-of-the-art tools in genomic, epigenomic and cell biology will be used to gain new understanding of the effects of heat stress on sheep oocyte competence and if those effects can affect to the fitness of offspring after in vitro fertilization. The results will help to understand which are the molecular mechanisms that intervene in the germ cells after heat stress and to propose possible strategies to remedy the damage caused by this stress.
