SACSIS is selecting a competitive candidate for the Power and Energy Analysis and Research Laboratory (PEARL) research group at the School of Industrial Engineering of the University of Castilla - La Mancha (UCLM) Decentralized Distribution Expansion Model in a Changing Energy Paradigm Recent developments in modular low-carbon resources are reshaping power systems, posing new operational and planning challenges for distribution networks. With the rise of distributed generation, highly digitalised consumers have higher control of generation and consumption. On top of that, the ownership of these decentralized energy resources (DERs) has set utility business model on the threshold of highly disruptive changes. Existing discussions on the ownership of these resources, together with advanced management solutions based on information and communication technologies (ICT), require the centralized energy systems be re-organized. A wide range of energy system integration solutions has evolved to meet the challenges and opportunities derived from this changing paradigm, fostering the cooperation among the grid users. Traditional centralized expansion planning models cannot longer be used to reflect a reality beyond its natural limitations. To understand and anticipate the results of the energy system evolution, electric power system development must evolve providing a negotiation space mechanism between all players, reflecting the increasing decentralized character of these resources.

A unique feature is its multidisciplinary approach aimed at developing a multi-agent large-scale decentralized planning tool based on game theory, acknowledging the emerging business models present in the distribution network, replacing the traditional centralized approach by a decentralized one harmonizing the decisions of the different stakeholders involved. The concrete objectives will be:

  • Proposing an alternative formulation considering different coalitional solutions (and their associated business models) into a multi-agent large-scale decentralized planning tool framework based on game theory that could revolutionize the distribution network paradigm and enable a complete reshape of the energy landscape. The tool will determine the optimal ownership of the different assets existing and coming into the network, as well as the expected interactions among the different stakeholders.
  • Integration of different ICT systems with the existing smart grid infrastructure and other external services and systems in a real-user environment. Different interoperable and scalable infrastructures will be coordinated via the ICT protocols, supporting the transition process towards standardised communication protocols.
