SACSIS is selecting a competitive candidate for the fuels and Engines group develops at the University of Castilla-La Mancha The project consists on the study of the effect of biofuels at low temperature, including their properties, engine and vehicle performance, emissions and startability. Many of the advanced biofuels which will be promoted by the imminent Renewable Energy Directive to be approved before summer 2018 (RED-lI) have as main drawback the presence of some compounds (mainly saturated or volatile ones, but also some others which are considered as impurIties) which under winter conditions (mainly low temperature and high relative humidity) may lead to filter clogging, excessive wear, excessive emissions, or difficulties to start. The project will be mainly experimental, and different equipment will be used such as instruments to measure cold-flow properties (cold filter plugging point, cloud point, pour point), scanning differential calorimeter, a filterability test bench, a high frequency reciprocating rig for wear scar measurement, an engine test bench equipped with all the necessary emissions analysers, and a chassis dynamometer located inside a climatic chamber in which a vehicle can be tested. Previously, the biofuels will be chemically analysed and their properties and those of their blends with conventional fuels will be measured. Then, the behaviour of these blends will be evaluated in both the engine test bench and the chassis dyno. In this latter case, driving cycles will be performed, as well as starting sequences at both ambient temperature (20°C) and low temperature (-7°C). The analysis of results will allow for recommendations on which are the more suitable blends to be used and on how to re-programme the electronic control unit when these blends are used.
