A research position for one Bolsa de Investigação para Mestre (1 BI-MSc) is opened at Instituto de Telecomunicações, in the scope of the Project DeepSPIN – Deep Structured Prediction In Natural Language Processing – Reference ERC-2017-STG 758969,
funded by the applicable financial framework (H2020/ERC).
The work for this position is in the area of Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing.
Duration: 12 months, with possibility of renewal up to 48 months. Start date: 16 April 2018 (or soon thereafter).
Monthly salary: 1900 Eur (net), according to the table of grant amounts awarded directly by Instituto de Telecomunicações. The payment will be made by bank transfer.

An interview might be requested if considered relevant by the selection jury. In this case, individual interviews will be made with the three best applicants, and will be included in criteria 2. The final grade will be given by combining the previous score (with a weight of 50%) with the grade after the interview (another 50%).

The overarching goal of DeepSPIN is to bring together deep learning and structured prediction to solve challenging tasks in natural language processing, including machine translation, quality estimation, and syntactic parsing. Three research directions are:
1) Empower neural networks with a planning mechanism for structural search. Connections will be made to reinforcement learning and combinatorial optimization.
2) Induction of interpretable latent structure inside the network. This will exploit synergies with probabilistic inference and sparse modeling methods.
3) Weak supervision, domain adaptation, and data-driven regularization. This will reduce the need for labeled data.
Applicable legislation: A fellowship will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by, “Regulation of Instituto de Telecomunicações’ fellowships” and “Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação”, according to Law no. 40/2004, dated August 18 (Status of Scientific Research Fellow), as amended and republished by Decree-Law No.202/2012 of August 27, and as amended by Decree-Law No.233/2012 of October 29 and by Law No.12/2013 of January 29, and Decree-Law No. 89/2013 of July 9.
REQUIRED EDUCATION LEVELEngineering: Master Degree or equivalent
- MSc in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Informatics, Applied Mathematics, or equivalent scientific areas
§ Excellent academic and practical background in programming, machine learning, and natural language processing
§ The candidate should have good knowledge of written and spoken English, be self-motivated and show initiative in solving problems
§ Strong preference is given to candidates with immediate availability to initiate the work and sound knowledge of Python
