This an exciting opportunity for a candidate interested in developing a suite of integrated skills to work in marine science. MixITiN ESR5
will be based in Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) and undertake secondments in the Marine Biology Section of Kobenhavns Universitet (Copenhagen, Denmark), CSIC (Spain) and AP Marine (Cyprus) to enhance our understanding of the ecophysiology and ecology of a specific group of mixotrophic plankton that engage in “body snatching” to acquire their photosystems. These organisms play an important role in ecology and trophic dynamics.
ESR5 will work in close collaboration with ESR3 (see www.mixotroph.org).
Supervisory Team: Dr Paraskevi Pitta (Greece; Primary Supervisor at host institute), Dr Albert Calbet (CSIC Spain), Prof. Per Juel Hansen (UCPH Denmark), Mr Antonis Petrou (AP Marine Cyprus; secondment supervisor)
Objectives: ESR5 will explore the interannual variability of mixotrophic pelagic ciliates (general non-constitutive-mixotrophs GNCMs) as part of the microbial food web of the oligotrophic Eastern Mediterranean.
