We are looking for two enthusiastic PhD students (one with Biomedical Sciences background and another with Medical background) to join our team at the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown, located in Lisbon, Portugal. The research positions are part of a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network titled “ELBA: European Liquid Biopsies Academy - Towards widespread clinical application of blood based diagnostic tools” https://cordis.europa.eu/project/rcn/211894_en.html

The Early-Stage Researcher (ESR) will be supported for 3 years of full-time study to undertake a PhD. The working group headed by David Lyden, Yibin Kang and Bruno Cota-Silva combines state-of-the art extracellular vesicles (EVs) analysis tools with cutting-edge technologies to investigate the role of EVs in cancer Biology and as potential markers of cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and prediction and monitoring of treatment response.

Liquid biopsies have been heralded as a game changer in cancer management, with blood tests offering a minimally invasive, safe, and sensitive alternative or complimentary approach for tissue biopsies. Blood represents a rich source of information through which solid cancers (and their subtypes) can be detected, identified and classified, and matched to a specific therapy. For this reason, the implementation of liquid biopsy in the clinical process is our objective, to facilitate the access of this methodology to all our patients. Widespread deployment of liquid biopsy-based approaches at the clinic and their use to diagnose cancer, to detect minimal residual disease, and to monitor treatment response in patients requires creative next-generation researchers with an innovative mindset with access to a unique toolbox, including medical know-how, molecular diagnostics expertise (from health economics to regulatory), and statistical/bioinformatical proficiency. Currently, there are no comprehensive training programs to address this need. To move the promising liquid biopsy technology forward, the research program and educational curriculum of the European Liquid Biopsy Academy (ELBA) will cover the entire value chain of diagnostics development and integrate all required disciplines and sectors.

Highly motivated individuals with strong interests in the development of innovative diagnostics, including assay development, clinical validation and standardization of blood-based technologies aimed at NSCLC (Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer) are invited to apply. Applicants should have a Master in Medical/Life Sciences (Biochemistry, Pharmacy, Biology or a related field) or Medical Degree. Candidates should be team players and willing to work in a highly collaborative and interactive research environmen.

Applicants must comply with the mobility rule: At the time of recruitment by the host organization, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organization for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the starting date. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account. As far as international organisations are concerned, this rule does not apply to the hosting of eligible researchers. However, the appointed researcher must not have spent more than 12 months at the host organisation in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment at the host organization. Please send your application including a CV, a motivational letter (1 page) describing your interest in joining our lab and your university degree certificates as one single PDF file to Applicants should submit a personal statement explaining their motivation (maximal one page), a CV and at least one academic reference as one single PDF file to: dcl2001@med.cornell.edu and ykang@princeton.edu with copy to bruno.costa-silva@research.fchampalimaud.org before May 15th 2018. Please include in the email the following reference: ELBA ESR3/4

Benefits

See the Marie Curie rates for Portugal. These rates are a gross EU contribution to the salary costs of the researcher. Consequently, the net salary results from deducting all compulsory (employer/employee) social security contributions as well as direct taxes (e.g. income tax) from the gross amounts (depending of the family situation of the fellow the grant might change the final salary).

Selection process

Applicants should submit a personal statement explaining their motivation (maximal one page), a CV and at least one academic reference as one single PDF file to: dcl2001@med.cornell.edu with copy to ykang@princeton.edu and bruno.costa-silva@research.fchampalimaud.org before May 15th 2018.
