Remote Image Analysis for Resource Assessment of Tidal Energy Sites
The location for and design optimisation of, tidal stream generation systems requires an accurate estimate of the Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE) at potential tidal energy sites. The challenge in providing an accurate assessment of the resources available necessitates an understanding of the temporal and spatial variation of flow over the swept area of the machine. Current methodologies by which this information can be provided requires expensive and time-consuming measurement techniques in the form of acoustic doppler current profilers. It is the contention of this proposal that the temporal and spatial variation of flow could be estimated from the airborne surveillance of the water surface, making it substantially more cost effective to characterise a tidal site and provide better spatial information for the location of machines in a station. Particular flow regimes are also exploited by wildlife. Sites with especially attractive characteristics thus have implications for EIA consenting.
The main language of the programme is English, hence all applicants are required to be proficient in both spoken and written forms of the English language. If not a native speaker, evidence must be provided of IELTS English proficiency or equivalent at level 6.5 or above.
The Bryden Centre PhD Studentships have been funded under the European Union's INTERREG VA Programme.
The studentships cover the full university fees at EU/UK level and include a yearly stipend of GBP £14,553 per annum (tax free) for up to 39 months. These studentships are open to applicants of all nationalities. These fully-funded doctoral studentships will also offer a generous study package, e.g. research consumables, equipment, travel budget and training when appropriate.
