The University of Vaasa is renewing itself and is making significant investments in the development of its research and operations. The research investments will be directed through three open, multidisciplinary research platforms: Vaasa Energy Business Innovation Centre - VEBIC, Digital Economy, and Open and User Innovation Lab (InnoLab). Their operations focus on energy and sustainable development, digital economy, and innovations and forms of open science. As of January 2018, the renewal will be strengthened by four academic schools: Accounting and Finance, Management, Marketing and Communication, and Technology and Innovations.

School of Accounting and Finance at the University of Vaasa is inviting applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Accounting. An applicant considered particularly qualified, may be employed as an Associate Professor. This is a fixed term position for 3 years and the start date can be negotiated.

Our School is among Finland’s largest educational departments in accounting and finance and its internationally renowned for its high-quality research. Our teaching comprises four subjcts: Accounting, Finance, Economics and Business Law. Our School's particular strong areas in research are management accounting, corporate financing and the financial markets, corporate financial statements, auditing, impact of the regulation of information on businesses, intangible capital, and financial literacy.

The tasks of the Assistant Professor include independent academic research, teaching duties as well as administrative tasks. The Assistant Professor may also supervise thesis at bachelor’s and master’s level. As part of the research group, the Assistant Professor also participates in the acquisition of external funding as well as national and international collaboration. The annual working time is 1624 hours. The tasks are agreed in more detail in the Annual Work Plan.

The teaching duties of the position are connected the the Bachelor’s and Master’s Programmes in the fields of Accouting and Finance. The position is connected to the Auditing and Control in Accounting (ACA) research group.

The salary is based on the University Salary System for Teaching and Research Staff. The salary for an Assistant Professor is based on demand levels 5-6 (2865-3340 €/month). An additional personal salary component is paid based on work performance (4-46.3%).

Specific Requirements


The position requires a doctoral degree in Economics and Business Administration or other relevant field, the ability to conduct independent scientific work and deliver high-quality teaching. A proven track record in international scientific publishing is especially valued.

The administrative language of the University of Vaasa is Finnish. The teaching languages are Finnish and English. If the candidate is not a Finnish citizen or a Finnish citizen who is not a native speaker, or has not been educated in Finnish, they may be granted an exemption from the language proficiency requirement without separate application. The candidate is, however, expected to acquire the necessary Finnish language skills needed in the position within a reasonable time period. The supervisor and candidate will define and agree upon what this time period is. The employer supports language studies. Strong English language skills are a prerequisite to succeed in the position.
