Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed term (18 month) position as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Autonomous Vehicle Technology in Electrical & Electronic Engineering at NUI Galway.

The position is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and Valeo under Lero (https://www.lero.ie) the Irish Software Research Centre.

The post-holder will be responsible for the design, development and management of a research platform for next-generation autonomous vehicle sensors.

The successful candidate will be based in the Electrical & Electronic Engineering discipline at NUI Galway, and will work as a liaison between the industry partner, Valeo, and the research team based at NUI Galway.

Lero: Ireland’s national software research centre, headquartered at the University of Limerick and involving all of Ireland’s seven universities, Dundalk Institute of Technology and Institute of Technology Tralee.

Job Description: The post-holder will be responsible for a broad spectrum of system development to develop vehicle-based research platform with a network of advanced sensors, incorporating data acquisition, communications and processing technologies. The successful candidate will be expected to take responsibility for project management, meeting appropriate milestones, timelines and deliverables. The post holder will also support a team of postgraduate researchers.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, test and validate on-vehicle sensors, data acquisition system, Vehicle to Infrastructure communications systems and all associated software (including front-end signal processing algorithms as appropriate);
  • Liaise with the industry partners;
  • Manage and schedule access to the test vehicle, and ensure that all Health and Safety practices and procedures are adhered to;
  • Actively participate in international conferences and meetings as required;
  • Publish in high-impact journals as appropriate;
  • Provide support and mentoring to post-graduate research students in the host research group;
  • Engage in appropriate continuing professional development activities to support their own career development plans.

    Essential Requirements:

  • An honours BE degree or equivalent in Electrical/Electronic/Energy/Computer Engineering,
  • A PhD, or equivalent (4+yrs) post graduate experience in a relevant research environment and in a relevant technical area.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Matlab, Python, Labview or other signal processing development tools.
  • Evidence of primary/senior authorship of peer-reviewed publications in relevant areas, or other equivalent output e.g. patents.
  • Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.
  • Full clean driving license with a minimum of 5 years driving experience.

    Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in sensor deployment, embedded design and communications equipment.
  • Experience of working with automotive systems and a practical working understanding of vehicle wiring systems.
  • Experience of working within a research team.
  • Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Flexibility to work on a broad range of technical challenges from electrical, mechanical, software, algorithmic and regulatory, coupled with an ability to quickly develop new skills as required.

     

    Appointment will be made at Postdoctoral Researcher level, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

     

    Salary: €38,850 - €46,255 per annum.

     

    Start Date: The position is available from February 2018.
