OFFER DESCRIPTION
The Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) is the technical university of Catalonia with its base campus located in the city of Barcelona. It is one of the largest technical universities of southern EU, with over 30,000 students spanning all levels from undergraduate to PhD, and employing over 2,500 faculty. The Mathematics Department of UPC is one of its largest departments, and hosts strong research groups in dynamical systems and Partial Differential Equations, among others. The research group in dynamical systems is involved in the activities of the Barcelona Graduate School of Mathematics (BGSMath), which is a platform that coordinates the mathematical academic activities and PhD programs of the three public universities within the area of Barcelona that have mathematics departments (UB, UAB and UPC).
The Mathematics Department invites applications for one PhD position in dynamical systems. The successful candidate will join the group of dynamical systems (https://dynamicalsystems.upc.edu/en) to conduct research in the areas of dynamical systems (Hamiltonian systems, celestial mechanics, Hamiltonian Partial Differential Equations...). They will be involved on subjects related to the ERC Starting Grant "Instabilities and homoclinic phenomena in Hamiltonian systems" (2018-2022) held by Marcel Guardia (http://mat- web.upc.edu/people/marcel.guardia/).
Description
The PhD fellow will be appointed as full-time employee of UPC, with affiliations at the Mathematics Department, and his/her position will be for three years (plus an additional year if needed). The starting date for this position should be between September 2018 and January 2019 (negotiable). The place of work will be the Mathematics Department at the UPC, in Barcelona (Spain) within the dynamical systems group.
If selected, you will have a generous travel allowance for conferences and summer schools. The teaching duties for this position are to teach 2 hours/week the second and third year of fellowship (negotiable). The cost of the annual PhD tuition fees will be assumed by the European project HAMINSTAB.
