OFFER DESCRIPTION

Antimicrobial resistance is, today, the most important health challenge

world-wide.

We are a group of 10 young researchers looking for an style='font-family:Times'>enthusiastic candidate, that will style='font-family:Times'>adapt well to the laboratory. We work

on Antimicrobial Resistance, from a molecular, ecological and One Health

perspective. We aim to understand the genetic flux of antimicrobial resistance

genes and plasmids in different ecological niches, including humans, animals

and the environment. We have successfully participated in previous

Marie-Sklodowska Curie ITN training programs, and are currently involved in

several national, European and world-wide projects.

We can recruit any young researcher

that has not yet finished his/her PhD. This includes young

researchers that have just finished their Masters, young researchers that are

about to defend their PhD, or young researchers that have worked in science but

have no PhD. The candidate must not have resided or carried out their main

activity (work, studies, etc.) in Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years

immediately prior to the recruitment. Our laboratory is based at the

Universidad Complutense de Madrid, one of the largest Universities in Europe.

We will perform the same selection procedure as we have done before, as we

are very happy with the candidates that we recruited. We will perform ten Skype

interviews, and we’ll cover the costs to invite

the last three candidates to spend a day in our laboratory in Madrid.

Our weekly lab meetings and discussions are held in English language, for

which good English skills are important. It is our believe, that style='font-family:Times'>in a good atmosphere, we can do better science,

for which adaptability, teamwork and involvement in your scientific subject and

scientific career are essential.

The candidate will be involved in two projects. One project related to the

ecology and evolution of plasmids using genomics (Illumina, Nanopore),

transcriptomics and other –omic techniques. Adaptations of plasmids to new

bacterial hosts will be tested. Further, in

vitro and in vivo

plasmid transfer, fitness and evolutionary experiments will elucidate the

biological basis of plasmid spread and adaptation in the gut. Metagenomic

analysis will be performed to identify the consequences of bacterial and/or

plasmid colonization in the context of the microbiome. The second project is

related to intrinsic resistance to antibiotics. We have identified that

intrinsic resistance to antibiotics is reversible in some bacterial species,

and we are starting to understand the genetic basis of this process. Mutagenesis,

transcriptomics and genomics as well as screening with known and new molecules

will elicit to translate the basic knowledge into in vivo experiments.

The full contract of three years includes international training with the

other 12 PhD candidates of the CARTNET project, Combatting Antimicrobial

Resistance: a Training Network; data-cke-saved-href="http://cartnet.ku.dk/">http://cartnet.ku.dk/
