Position

We are looking for a distinctive researcher with the passion to apply deep quantum technological ideas in real-world applications. The Physics PhD candidate will be part of the EU-project Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovate Training Network ‘Quantum-enhanced Sensing via Quantum Control’ (QUSCO), and thus partake in a network of like-minded researchers. The PhD position will be for 3 years, with the option of prolonging the studies for one additional year. The candidate will be supported for the duration of the studies with an above-average compensation.

The project offers the opportunity to combine world-class research in quantum optics (PhD supervision by Prof. Fedor Jelezko of Ulm University, one of approx. 200 physicists world-wide to receive the Highly Cited Researcher distinction) with the potential of positively impacting the lives of people world-wide. The project will focus on color centers in diamonds, which have surpassed the state of the art in key areas of molecular sensing, imaging and analysis, even at ambient conditions. The researcher will apply sophisticated optimization and control algorithms to significantly enhance the capabilities of such diamond-based devices.

Responsibilities

The candidate will combine theoretical and experimental research to apply ideas from quantum optimal control in devices for quantum sensing. The project approach will include devising ground-up novel control pulse sequences, as well as establishing learning and optimization based on real-time feedback from the experimental systems. Applications of the developed sequences will include prolonging spin coherence by decoupling from external noise sources, increasing quantum gate fidelities and improving detection efficiency. Being part of a larger team working on the devices, the candidate will have a strong support system for overcoming technical challenges and be able to focus on achieving results

Skills/Qualifications

The candidate must hold or be on track to complete a Master’s degree in physics, computer science or electrical engineering, and have graduated or on track to graduate with distinction. Solid background in either optimization algorithms or magnetic resonance is a prerequisite. Working knowledge of Python and C++ is required. Basic knowledge of quantum mechanics, machine learning algorithms, optimal control theory, and/or nitrogen-vacancy center physics are an advantage.

Working language is English.

Due to EC regulations the successful candidate must not have been a resident of Germany for more than 12 months in the last 3 years.
