We offer a doctoral researcher position in applied quantum sensing at Thales Research & Technology (TRT) in the framework of the EC-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network “Quantum-enhanced Sensing via Quantum Control” (QuSCo). TRT is the corporate research laboratory of Thales group and it performs applied research in fields that are promising for future Thales products. TRT has numerous collaborations with academic partners, in particular with CNRS, with which the candidate will interact.

NV centers in diamond are a promising technology in view of future applications. We are developing several devices based on this technique, among them a wide-field magnetic imager used to image electronic circuits and a large bandwidth radio-frequency spectrum analyser with instantaneous response. So far, those devices are working in continuous optical and RF regime. We intend to operate them in pulse regime in order to improve their performances. Coherent control techniques have shown to bring a significant improvement on pulsed magnetometry experiments, most of them involving single NV centers. In the framework of the project, we intend to explore those techniques on ensembles of NV centers. We will investigate either standard diamond material with four possible NV orientations or advanced diamond samples where the NV center orientation can be controlled. We will test optimal control techniques on our devices to significantly improve performance and, in addition, explore new applications.

We are seeking for a candidate with strong motivation in applications of quantum technologies. The candidate shall have a Masters in quantum physics and a solid background in physics. Although mainly involved in experimental developments, the candidate will have to be able to interact with the theoretical teams with which we will collaborate in the framework of the project. The thesis will be done under supervision of Thierry Debuisschert and Ludovic Mayer at TRT.

Due to ETN rules, the candidate must not have been resident in France for more than 12 months within the 3 years from the start of the project (1st Nov 2017).
