The INSOCO project (Plan Nacional DPI2016-80116-P) studies the fundamental aspects of the self-organization of social behavior, from low level entrainment to higher level emergence of social conventions, in multi-agent populations considering the different levels of agent control: from pure reactive interactions to complex adaptive agents.

To fulfill this objective INSOCO follows an integrated perspective, taking into account the complexity of the individual agent’s control and embodiment and that of the environment.
INSOCO will characterize cooperation and competition in agent populations in terms of the agent control complexity, its memory and information access, as well as, the environmental constraints.
The project has two domains of application: Robotics and Human Experimental Psychology. These are linked with these objectives:
1) Realize and implement populations of agents (embodied simulations and real robots) interacting in an environment within the rules of a game theoretic framework. For simulation and experiments, custom and existing environments as V-Rep, Gazebo, Multi-Agent Environments, will be used. Mobile robots based on Arduino and Linux boards (like Edison) developed at UPF will be used for implementation of real world scenarios.
2) Realize human experiments to extract human behavioral data in a game theoretic tasks. The extracted data will be in its turn modeled and used to design new experiments.
So we are offering 2 places:
-One PhD candidate position with strong interest in multi-agent systems, robotics or complex systems Good programming skills are required, preferably in Python, C++.
-One research assistant or engineer to contribute to the project from a technical point of view. The aim is to build a validation platform consisting in an arena where multiple physical mobile robots interact together. Good expertise in Maker technologies such as 3D printing, Arduino programming will be appreciated, as well as Python for programming other boards based on Linux and Simulations.
