Offer Description
Applications are invited from suitable qualified candidates for two full time, 36 months fixed-term positions, as a Doctoral Candidate (DC) on the MetacMed Doctoral Network at the University of Calabria (UNICAL).
These positions are DC1 and DC2, which are two of the 12 DCs being recruited as a part of a European-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network (DN) on Acoustic and mechanical metamaterials for biomedical and energy harvesting applications – ‘MetacMed’, GRANT-101119738, see www.metacmed.eu.
The successful applicant will be enrolled on the PhD in ICT programme at the University of Calabria, and will work on the topic of:
DC1 - “Metamaterial lenses for ultrasonic sub-wavelength imaging in water”, under the supervision of Prof. Marco Ricci and Dr. Stefano Laureti;
DC2:“Artificial Intelligence for discovering novel acoustic/mechanical metamaterials designs and properties” under the supervision of Dr. Stefano Laureti and Prof. Andrea Tagarelli;
Secondments at:
DC1 – Amazemet (PL) 3 months, University of Leeds (UK) 4 months, University of Warwick (UK) 4 months,
DC2 – CNRS (FR) 7 months, University of Messina (IT) virtual mobility, OrthoSens (CH) virtual mobility,
are foreseen for these positions.
About the positions, salary, and the research projects
This full-time positions will be available, subject to fundings, from November 2024 and offered on a fixed-term 36-month contract. These posts benefit from a highly competitive and attractive salary, plus mobility and family allowances as applicable. In detail, each of the successful applicants will receive (in 36 months) : €119,217.60 + €21,600.00 for Mobility Allowance, plus additional budgets for “Family allowance”, “Long term leave”, and “Special Needs” if the conditions for their request under the project are met. All amounts are to be considered before taxes. Working as a part of an international research team, the successful applicants will complete research projects on:
DC1 – “Metamaterial lenses for ultrasonic sub-wavelength imaging in water”
The objectives of this project are:
- Design Metamaterials (MMs)-based lenses and hyperlenses to be used in water at 2 MHz;
- Develop FEM models to predict their behavior;
- Use Additive Manufacturing (AM) to build prototype optimized structures using trapping-air within the polymer or using MMs based GRIN structures;
- Embed piezo-electricity in the lenses to tune their working bandwidth in real time and/or steer the ultrasonic beam and act as filters;
- Test these lenses both in trough transmission and pulse-echo mode and verify the intended lateral resolution;
DC2 – “Artificial Intelligence for discovering novel acoustic/mechanical metamaterials designs and properties”
The objectives of this project are:
- Create an extended database of ultrasonic Metamaterials (MMs)/Phononic Cristals (PCs) via FEM simulation simulating a range of different mechanical properties, which include random geometrical arrangement in 2D and 3D;
- Use AI (Machine learning -Deep learning) techniques to boost the discovery of novel structures and optimised them, and benchmark against the current state-of-the-art;
- Verify the suitability of the top-performing AI algorithms;
- Understand the potential of MM for fine-tuning spinal auxhetic MM devices’ properties (in collaboration with OrthoSens).
