The project is situated at the boundaries of highly interconnected domains such as cell biology, skin science, formulation science, and polymer chemistry. Positions and projects are part of the just accepted CITYCARE grant from the European Commission (Horizon2020 - Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions - Innovative Training Networks) entitled “Impact of air pollutants on cutaneous responses in both healthy and compromised skin barrier, and innovative solutions to protect skin against urban pollution” which is done in collaboration with Prof. Barbara Rothen-Rutishauser (Professor at the Adolphe Merkle Institute in Switzerland), Dr. Marc Eeman (Skin Care Application Designer at Dow Corning Europe S.A. in Belgium), and Prof. Giuseppe Valacchi (Professor at the University of Ferrara in Italy - Department of Life Science and Biotechnologies). The CITYCARE project will welcome and train three early-stage researchers (ESR1, ESR2 and ESR3) from any nationality for a period of maximum 36 months (starting in February 2018).

Eligibility criteria

In addition, all applicants have to fulfill the eligibility criteria for MSCA-ITN projects defined by the European Commission (http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/index_en.html):

  • be in the first four years following the completion of their Master’s (or equivalent) degree,
  • not already possess a doctorate degree,
  • not have lived in the hiring country (Belgium for ESR1, Italy for ESR2 and Switzerland for ESR3) for more than 12 months over the last 3 years.

Selection process

The recruitment strategy will be based on open, efficient and transparent procedures, in line with “The Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researcher”. All applications fulfilling the position description will be taken into consideration independently of the gender, age, and nationality of the applicant. The consortium will ensure that equal opportunities are provided to applicants whose scientific careers have been interrupted.

HIRING CONDITIONS AND SECONDMENTS

  • ESR1 will be hired by Dow Corning Europe S.A. in Belgium and enrolled at the Faculty of Science of the University of Fribourg, Switzerland, for the doctoral degree.
  • ESR2 will be hired by the University of Ferrara in Italy and enrolled for a doctoral degree in “Biotechnologies and Biomedical Sciences” at the same University.
  • ESR3 will be hired by and enrolled at the Faculty of Science of the University of Fribourg in Switzerland for the doctoral degree.
  • All candidates (ESR1, ESR2, ESR3) will be seconded to the other organizations throughout the whole duration of the project with a minimum of 18 months spent at the industrial organization (Dow Corning Europe S.A. in Belgium)

  • Enthusiasm for top-quality research and good oral and written English communication skills are a must. Proficiency in other European languages (French, German or Italian) is highly appreciated.

ESR2:

  • Applicants must have a MSc or equal degree in Cell Biology or Tissue Engineering.
  • Excellent skills in the domain of cell culture techniques and molecular biology are expected.
  • Additional knowledge in Polymer Chemistry, Skin Science or Cosmetic Science is a plus.
