The Institute of Classics / Classical Archaeology of the Christian-Albrechts-University in Kiel (CAU), Germany,
invites applications for a

Professorship in Urban Archaeology (W2, 100 %, permanent)

Job description
The successful candidate is expected to have a main research focus in the field of urban archaeology for the period
of Classical antiquity – the urban cultures of Greece and Rome – which is to be proven by the completion of a
scientific monograph (e. g. PhD, habilitation). An expertise in at least one of the following fields is requested:
- method and theory of archaeological urban research
- comparative analysis of ancient cities (regional and diachronic)
- archaeological exploration of ancient cities (fieldwork)
- analysis of urban architecture (buildings research)
The focus lies on the relation between the cultural and natural environment and social space in cities and their
hinterland. The successful candidate will assume a central role in the interlinking of existing urban research
projects at CAU. She/He will participate actively in the university’s research focus “Societal, Environmental and
Cultural Change”, and especially in the Johanna Mestorf Academy, the CRC TransformationsDimensionen and the
Graduate School Human Development in Landscapes. Furthermore, the conception and organisation of scientific
conferences and the acquisition of third-party funding are part of the requirement profile. In teaching, the successful
candidate is expected to enhance CAU‘s focus on urban archaeology through the creation of an internationally
visible teaching programme. Active participation in the interdisciplinary research network of humanities, natural and
life sciences is also expected, as is participation in academic self-administration.

Requirements
Requirements for the position are an excellent PhD in the field of Classical Archaeology and proof of further
scientific achievement through a junior professorship, habilitation (post-doctoral thesis) in Classical Archaeology or
the completion of a second scientific monograph in the field (published or completed manuscript). A substantial and
internationally visible publication record concerning diverse aspects of urban archaeology is also required, along
with evidence of success in external funding applications. Experience with collaborative or international research
programmes is particularly desirable. Good command of the German and/or English language, alternatively the
willingness to learn the German language, is an essential prerequisite.
The position is opened with respect to Art. § 61 and § 63, Section 1 of the Higher Education Act of the State of
Schleswig-Holstein. For additional information, please refer to the website www.berufungen.uni-kiel.de.
