The PD Researcher will be member of the ERC project MAPLE.

MAPLE seeks to map and analyse the europeanisation of domestic politics before and after the eurozone crisis (2000-16). Candidates must have completed a PhD (preferably in the last 3 years) in Political Science. Preference will be given to researchers with advanced knowledge in quantitative methodologies for voting behaviour, in a comparative and longitudinal perspective. In addition, it is expected that applicants demonstrate interest in and/or research experience in the fields of Europeanisation, political behaviour, party and parliamentary politics. More specifically, candidates must show availability to engage in either Europeanisation, political attitudes or voting behaviour.

Contract duration

12 months, with 6 months of probation period contingent on a satisfactory performance. The grant might be renewed for equal or different periods up to a full period of 40 months.

 

Pay scale

Salary will be of 1.495,00 Euros per month, according to the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) Research Grants pay scale (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.pt). Researchers are also entitled to the payment of personal accident insurance and voluntary social insurance. Please note that this grant is not taxable. In addition, annual fees for participating and attending international conferences will be available, including travel and accommodation costs. There will also be annual funds to attend additional training, especially in methodological skills.

Workplace

The work will be developed on the premises of: Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (Instituto de Ciências Sociais da Universidade de Lisboa), and other places considered necessary for the execution of the work plan, under the scientific supervision of the Principal Investigator.

 

 

Eligibility criteria

  1. A PhD degree in Political Science, preferably obtained in the last 3 years, or to be obtained by 22nd June;
  2. Proficiency in written and spoken English;
  3. Proficiency in one or more other languages relevant for the project (Portuguese, Spanish, Greek, German or French) is an advantage;
  4. Previous research experience with quantitative methodologies;
  5. Previous work and interest in the field of Europeanisation will be valued;
  6. Previous experience as a member of a research team and good team-working skills;
  7. Capacity to work independently, according to the instructions received;
  8. Immediate availability is an advantage.

Selection process

Application

Candidates are invited to submit their application by sending the following documents:

  1. Personal statement (in English), in which the candidate is expected to explain the reasons for applying and the area(s) of research selected (see point 1), as well as future career plans;
  2. Detailed Curriculum Vitae (in English);
  3. Two journal articles, book chapters and/or chapters of the PhD dissertation authored by the candidate;
  4. Copy of the passport/identity card and NIF (fiscal identification number);
  5. Copy of the PhD certificate and other documents considered relevant;
  6. Names and contact details of two referees who are willing to send recommendation letters on request.
  7. Copy of the Doctoral Certificate, as well as any other documents deemed necessary.

Evaluation criteria

Selection of the candidate will be performed by evaluation of the submitted documents (60% in total, of which the CV weights 50% and the personal statement 10%), followed by an interview (40%) of the top candidates, taking into consideration their educational performance, professional experience, merit and motivation. Candidates with a positive review will be invited for an interview, which is mandatory to obtain the position and can be optionally held by teleconference. The Jury reserves the right not to fill this position.

Skills/Qualifications

The successful candidate will be integrated in the MAPLE project. This involves providing support at all stages of the research and in all the tasks detailed in the project application, as well as contributing to any other activity falling within the overall project objectives, under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator, including:

  1. Contributing to the definition of the operationalisation of the project goals for measuring politicisation in the media and parliamentary debates;
  2. Contributing to the overall implementation of the project stages;
  3. Contributing to the overall positive interaction of all Project’s members;
  4. Helping define the project work distribution among the PI, Post-doc and Doctoral students;
  5. Providing administrative support to the PI in the interaction with the European Commission;
  6. Contributing to the implementation of information management and communication strategy;
  7. Contributing to the setting up of online web-panel surveys through all its stages;
  8. Analysing the data, in a comparative and longitudinal perspective, using the relevant quantitative methods;
  9. Participating in international conferences and seminars, with presentation of scientific papers resulting from the project;
  10. Participating and supporting the management of project meetings;
  11. Participating in the project’s publishing strategy, including reports, journal articles, book chapters, etc.
  12. Preparing project deliverables and contacts with stakeholders;
  13. Any other task that may reasonably arise, related to the full implementation of the MAPLE project, and defined by the project coordinator.

The selected Postdoctoral Researcher will work under the supervision of Dr. Marina Costa Lobo.

Any publications which originate from Project’s data must be previously approved by the Principal Investigator of the Project, Dr. Marina Costa Lobo.
