The Department of Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/department-of-philosophy-history-culture-and-…) brings together the long traditions of the oldest of the university's disciplines and new, rising subjects. The multidisciplinarity of the humanities forms the basis for the research and teaching provided by the department. The department has over 1500 major degree students.

The position is Swedish-speaking.

The successful applicant may be appointed to the first level (assistant professorship) or the second level (associate professorship) of the tenure track system, depending on his or her qualifications and career stage.

An assistant/associate professor will carry out and supervise scientific research, provide interdisciplinary teaching based on it, follow developments in research and participate in societal interaction in his/her field and in international cooperation. He or she shall also participate in the development of teaching and acquire research funding. He or she is expected to contribute innovatively to the development of the field.

An appointee to the position of assistant/associate professor within the tenure track system shall hold a doctor’s degree and have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants shall demonstrate their capability and motivation as regards an academic career through publications and other means.

When assessing the qualifications of each applicant, attention will be paid to both scholarly and teaching qualifications. Scholarly qualifications include scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience as well as international elected positions. When considering the teaching qualifications of each applicant, attention will be focused on teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as participation in doctoral education. The applicant’s leadership and interaction skills as well as activity in the academic community will also be taken into account.

Professors are required to be competent in the language in which they provide instruction, in other words, Finnish or Swedish. The professorship in maritime archaeology features Swedish as the language of instruction. The appointee must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Finnish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good English skills.

The salary for the position will be based on level 7 of the requirement scheme for teaching and research positions in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance will be paid.

3) A report (max. 5 pages) on the applicant’s research activities (including activities in scientific communities, the acquisition of research funding and international scholarly work)

4) A report (1-2 pages) on how the applicant intends to develop his or her research and focus his or her activities, if appointed

5) A list of publications.
