The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain) at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled software engineer to help build a web-based software platform for data-driven design of microbial cells and communities. The Center conducts research on metabolic engineering and synthetic biology of microbial and mammalian cell factories for chemical and therapeutic protein production. The position will be within the DD-DeCaF consortium, a project recently funded by the European Commission to develop new bioinformatics approaches that leverage system-level data for biotechnological applications.
With advances in synthetic biology, genomes can now be edited at unprecedented speed and fidelity allowing making multiple changes in the same genome at the same time. This increases the need for computational tools to design cells and communities of cells analogous to the tools used in Computer Aided Design (CAD) of cars, buildings and other man-made objects. The European Commission has awarded 6.3 million Euros to a four-year collaborative project to build a CAD tool for data-driven design of cells and microbial communities. Applications will range from human health to sustainable production of chemicals.
As a successful applicant, you will be part of a diverse group of scientists and engineers from leading academic institutions and innovative companies that will work towards this common goal. At DTU Biosustain, you will join an agile team of engineers that makes cutting edge technologies accessible to cell factory engineers. Furthermore, you will regularly interact with other teams at DTU Biosustain to ensure interoperability with other software products developed at DTU Biosustain. Together as a team you’ll share the responsibilities of development, testing, deployment, and operation of the platform.

Primary areas of responsibility
- Develop front-end tools and UIs using TypeScript and AngularJS
- Develop and operate a microservice framework of Dockerized webservices (visualization, databases, simulation tools etc.) that will form the back-end of the DeCaF platform
- Distribute, collaborate on, and deploy services using GitHub, continuous integration (CI) and Docker
- The share between front-end and back-end work will be flexibly adjusted to your skills and preferences
Our expectations of you
- Able to write high-quality, structured and maintainable code
- Knowledge of server-side web development in Python, Ruby, Node.js, Go, Rust or similar
- Experience working with RESTful APIs in a web application context
- Experience designing data models for database ORMs and writing RESTful APIs
- Experience with Docker or deployment of web applications to AWS, Heroku etc. or other deployment and operations knowledge is a plus
- Experience with developing and working with microservices is a plus
- Prior experience with projects involving relatively complex data is a plus
- Genuine interest in data analysis, visualization (D3) and biology is a plus

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.
The period of employment is 2 and a half years.
The working place will be at DTU Lyngby Campus.
