Offer Description

A competition is open for the award of 4 Research Scholarships (BI) for Master's students, for the development of R&D activities under the Multi-Annual Financing Contract for R&D Units 2020-2023, entered into between the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. (FCT), the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto (FLUP), and the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Porto (IF) - Programmatic Financing - Ref. UIDP/00502/2020, funded by national funds through FCT and ongoing at FLUP, under the following conditions:

1. Scientific Field: Philosophy; sub-area of Philosophy Teaching.

2. Admission Requirements:

All individuals holding the following requirements may apply for this scholarship, pending the submission of the corresponding documents:

a) Bachelor's degree completed* in the scientific field of the competition;

b) Being enrolled as a Master's student in the scientific area of the competition, to be proven before the celebration of the contract;

c) Project for conducting research within the research groups of the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Porto (IF).

*If the qualification has been granted by a foreign higher education institution, it must be recognised by a Portuguese higher education institution, pursuant to the provisions of article 25 of Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16, which approves the legal regime for the recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of Higher Education awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and article 4 (2) (e) of Decree-Law No. 60/2018 of August 3, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled before the date of celebration of the contract.

3. Preferential conditions:

a) Relevant academic background in the scientific field of the competition;

b) Scientific research activities, management, and participation in scientific projects, publications and relevant professional experience;

c) Having active enrollment during the scholarship in the Master's program in Teaching Philosophy in Secondary Education at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto;

d) Merit of the proposed work project for conducting research within the project's scope.

4. Work plan

The main activities to be developed by the fellow within the scope of the scholarship include:

a) The presentation and development of an individual work plan within the management and scientific activities of one or more research groups at IF.

b) Conducting research and organizing project activities under the supervision of the PI of the research group.

c) Participation and presentation at scientific meetings of the work carried out during the scholarship.

5. Applicable Legislation and Regulations

Research Fellow Statute, approved by Law No. 40/2004, of August 18, in accordance with the current stipulations;

Regulation of Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. approved by Regulation No. 950/2019, in accordance with the current stipulations;

Regulation of Research Grants of the University of Porto – approved by Regulation No. 184/2021, published in the Diário da República, 2nd Series, No. 43, of March 3;

Legal regime for the recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of higher education awarded by foreign higher education institutions;

Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by Decree-Law No. 4/2015, of January 7.

6. Workplace

The work will be developed within the scope of a research group at the Institute of Philosophy, under the scientific guidance of Professor Doctor José Meirinhos (Director of the Institute of Philosophy), Professor Doctor Domingos Faria (Master's Director), and with specific co-guidance for the project's theme.

7. Scholarship duration:

The scholarship has a duration of 6 months. The scholarship contract, under an exclusivity regime, may be renewed, for equal or different periods, during the eligibility of the current project's research funding, according to institutional needs and financial availability, up to the maximum duration of the project, without ever exceeding the limits defined in the Regulations for the type of scholarship in question.

8. Monthly maintenance allowance:

The scholarship amount corresponds to 990,98€ according to the table of scholarship values directly attributed by FCT, I.P. in the country.

Payment will be made by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto by bank transfer. In addition to this allowance, the fellow will be covered by personal accident insurance.

9. Selection methods:

Applications are evaluated according to the regulations and procedures of the FCT doctoral scholarship competition. Admitted applications will be scored on a scale of 0 to 100 points for each of the following evaluation criteria:

— Criterion A - Curriculum Vitae Merit, with a weight of 60%:

• Sub-criterion A1 – Academic background, with a weight of 20%;

• Sub-criterion A2 – Scientific research activities, management, and participation in scientific projects; publications and relevant professional experience, with a weight of 40%;

— Criterion B - Merit of the Work Project, with a weight of 30%;

— Criterion C - Motivation Letter, with a weight of 10%.

For the purpose of deciding on the awarding of scholarships, candidates will be ranked according to the weighted average of the scores obtained in each of the three criteria, translated by the following formula:

FinalScore = [(0,20  ×𝑨𝟏) + (0,40  ×𝑨𝟐)] + (𝟎,3𝟎 ×𝑩) + (𝟎, 𝟏𝟎 ×𝑪)

In case of withdrawal of the selected candidate, he/she may be replaced by the candidate holding second place in the approved final ranking list, which, for all due purposes, constitutes the recruitment reserve list and which will last until November 31, 2024. In the event that none of the candidates demonstrates the required profile for carrying out the work plan, the jury reserves the right not to award the scholarship.

10. Composition of the Selection Jury:

President: Professor Doctor Domingos Faria;

1st Effective Member: Professor Doctor Maria João Couto;

2nd Effective Member: Professor Doctor Paula Cristina Pereira;

1st Alternate Member: Professor Doctor José Francisco Preto Meirinhos;

2nd Alternate Member: Professor Doctor Mattia Riccardi.

11. Publication/notification of results:

The final results will be sent via e-mail to the address given by the candidates in their application.

Candidates have a window of 10 working days starting from the day immediately after the notification to make a statement at the hearing of the interested parties, under articles 121 et seq. of the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA).

The final decision must be made no later than 60 working days after the conclusion of the hearing of interested parties or the public consultation.

12. Form of submission of applications and application deadline:

12.1. The call is open until May 2nd, 2024 (until 11:59 pm local time).

Applications must be submitted on the FLUP website at the following address: https://sigarra.up.pt/flup/pt/cnt_cand_geral.concursos_list (Ref. 2024/14, no. 123) with submission of the following documents:

a) Curriculum vitae, including: identification; academic background; professional experience; participation in scientific events (with or without presentation); involvement in research projects; publications; other elements considered relevant for the evaluation of the application;

b) Copy of the Bachelor's degree certificate and copy of document proving the recognition of the degree or foreign diploma recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution, if applicable, to be submitted until the formalization of the hiring;

c) Research and application work project, including: Title (maximum 20 words), Abstract (maximum 200 words), Keywords (maximum of 5), State of the art (maximum of 600 words), Objectives (maximum 300 words), Detailed description including at least 4 outcomes, such as presentations and publications, to be completed during the scholarship period (maximum 900 words), Bibliography (maximum 25 references), to enable the evaluation of criterion B of point 9 of this notice;

d) Cover letter and motivation letter, indicating the research group, the conditions, and resources of the Hosting Institution;

e) Copy of one (1) scientific work in the scientific area of the scholarship (see point 1 of the notice);

f) Proof of enrolment in the Master's program to be attended, to be submitted until formalization of the hiring;

g) Eligibility statement (attached).

12.2. Failure to submit the aforementioned documents in points a) to d) of point 12.1 will result in the administrative exclusion of the candidates.

12.3. In addition to the documents indicated in the preceding point, the candidate must also submit other documents aimed at enabling their evaluation process, proof of the preference conditions listed in point 3 of the notice.

12.4. The application and all associated documents, including other relevant evaluation documents, must be written in Portuguese or English.

In order to ensure the reading of all documents, the preferred format for recording is the Portable Document Format (.pdf). These can be compressed into .zip format.

13. The selected candidate in this competition commits to pursue research while respecting, cumulatively, the following conditions:

  1. Integrate their research activities within the scope of the project and the activities of the Institute of Philosophy of the University of Porto;
  2. Actively participate in the scientific activities promoted by the project, collaborating in their organization;
  3. Participate with presentations, throughout the scholarship period, in international scientific events;
  4. Submit works for publication.

14.
