The Department of Archaeology at York is looking for a skilled and highly motivated Early Stage Researcher (PhD candidate), with experience in either (i) early paper production or application of proteomics to art history.

Working on the European Commission-funded TEMPERA: Teaching Emerging Methods in Palaeoproteomics for the European Research Area, you will undertake doctoral research focusing on characterisation of gelatin and its role in the development of early books. You will consider this data in the context of the development of paper and printing technology.

You will be supervised by Professor Matthew Collins.

This is a 36-month fully funded PhD opportunity enabling you to study for a doctorate at the University of York.

In order to comply with European Commission regulations, to be eligible to apply for this role you must, at 1 October 2017, be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of your research career and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.

Mobility Rule: on 1 October 2017 you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the UK for more than 12 months in the preceding 3 years. Compulsory national service and/or short stays such as holidays are not taken into account.
